When I first moved to Knoxville 6 years ago, I'd already been training jiu jitsu. Choosing a new place to train was no small task but ended up being an incredibly easy choice. John and Gabe are great instructors that love questions, are knowledgable in both self defense and sport applications, and care about gym safety, culture, and cleanliness. They have real self defense experience and show up for their students at competitions. While BJJ was always my first love, I've found that thai boxing is also a lot of fun because of their enthusiasm. For me, its definitely the best jiu jitsu in town because John and Gabe help ensure that what I am learning is applicable for my body size and type. Because of the skills I've gained, I am confident and my partner is comfortable with me working late by myself or going out with my friends. He jokingly calls me his "body guard" because I have a higher level of situational awareness. I would 100% reco
The Hosford jiu-jitsu academy is absolutely top notch. The instructors have a lifetime of learning and knowledge and are excellent teachers. The culture they have created is very positive and conducive to learning. This is not a "gym bro" school or somewhere where you worry about getting hurt from aggro meat heads. I started my bjj journey at 46 years old with them, and still train regularly with them now over 4 years later. Training bjj will greatly improve your life, in many ways beyond the obvious, and there's no better place in East TN to train than at this school.
A true come as you are place with a very welcoming environment for newcomers. Trained at this school for almost 2 years now and wouldn’t recommend any other place. Huge mat space. John’s wit and knowledge are going to ensure a fun class every night! He doesn’t try and sell you merch and gi’s. He shows Jiu Jitsu. Broad range of training partners! See you on the mats
I found it welcoming, very informative, technical and clean. You recieve instruction from a 4th degree and a 1st degree blackbelt, which is alot to take in at once. The kids classes are highly informative, technical and fun as well. Learning new things each class, and enjoying the group.
I wanted to express my deepest gratitude to Professor Gabe, for always supporting Our Brazilian Jiu jitsu community. professor Gabe has a tremendous high level of skill as a Black Belt instructor and is always willing to help other students regardless of where they’re from. He makes us all better. Great coach and leader. Very humble and kind. We are so thankful for him everyday. He makes all of us Better. I’m a huge fan.
What a special place. We took our son to check out the kids class. The instructors were fun and did a fantastic job including him. All of the other students were very respectful and encouraging. Our son fit right in. Highly recommend this is this program to any parent looking for something great for their kids! We will definitely be signing up this Fall!
