Great gym, great people. I was traveling through Knoxville and had the good fortune to get to train at Cate for the weekend! Their whole team was very welcoming and very kind to me while we trained and chatted. The team was gritty and tough. They showed great skill across the whole of jiujitsu. Especially wrestling. The skill level and the environment shows a great level of leadership in the gym. Whether you’re traveling through or looking for a gym to call home. This is a place that you can have fun and get good at martial arts. Can’t recommend them enough enough!
If you are looking for a new gym to challenge yourself and improve your martial arts skills in the Knoxville area I would seriously consider Cate BJJ and kickboxing. It has all the hallmarks that you would look for in a good gym. The coach, Josh, rolls and spars everyday and teaches with a sport psychology approach which really helps, its fairly priced (a little under $6 per session if you come 5 days a week), and the gym is clean and safe. Everyone is friendly but make no mistake everyone comes to work. The culture that they have built there is bar none and I would recommend anyone of any skill level to come in for a free session.
In town for a week due to work. I searched for jiu jitsu places nearby and Josh Cate's place popped up as a good recommendation. It did not disappoint. He runs a well formatted class focused primarily in no gi grappling. The students were very welcoming, as well as challenging. Lots of focused drilling and sparring rather than mindless repetition without focus. I will definitely be back to attend class here the next time I'm in town.
This is a great gym, I would recommend anyone who is interested in starting or continuing their training to check it out! I believe the gym is great for several reasons. Coach Cate is a top notch teacher who keeps the students engaged, learning new techniques, motivated, safe and having a good time. The gym caters to hobbyists and pros/amateur fighters alike. The students are great, with a range of people of different walks of life with varying fitness levels and skills levels. This is one of the only places in town I know of that focuses entirely on No Gi. There is a focus on ground technique's and stand up techniques. The price is unbeatable.
Been coming here for 2 months now and can say it’s an amazing experience surrounded by people who wants to see you achieve any goal you have. It’s more than a group of people in a gym but has a family feeling there. Come check it out I promise you won’t be disappointed. Although some classes has numerous people there Coach Josh does not hesitate to help any individual out. For my people that’s looking to compete either in jujitsu or kickboxing anything like that. Trust and believe this gym will make a BEAST out of you this I promise.
I came to Cates's as a 38 year old guy brand new to martial arts. Joining this gym was, without a doubt, one of the best decisions I've made. For over two years now, I leave every class and open mat feeling glad that I showed up and put in the work. Coach and my teammates are highly valued and I welcome anyone who wants to come in and train to improve their lives on multiple fronts.
