We recommend 1802 Jiu-Jitsu to everyone we meet! We've been training at 1802 as a family since our oldest was only 4 years old and now she's almost 12 and it's been an amazing experience from day one. The coaches and professors are incredibly welcoming, patient, and truly care about each student's progress — not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. What really stands out is the family-oriented atmosphere. Whether you're a beginner or more advanced, everyone is treated with respect and encouragement. It’s a safe space where toddlers, kids, teens, and adults can learn discipline, self-defense, and most importantly, build confidence. My kids used to be hesitant to try new things, but after training with 1802, I’ve seen a huge boost in their self-esteem and focus — both on and off the mat. The sense of community here is strong, and it feels like you're part of something bigger. If you’re looking for a place that teaches re
1802 Jiu Jitsu has been a truly amazing place for our family. My oldest daughter, who is high-functioning ASD, started attending classes shortly after the COVID pandemic, and it has been one of the best decisions we’ve made. The community here is incredibly supportive and welcoming. From day one, the coaches showed such patience, understanding, and genuine care—not just for my daughter, but for every student on the mat. They’ve created an environment where people of all abilities and backgrounds feel safe, respected, and encouraged to grow. What stands out most is the strong sense of family at 1802. It’s not just a gym, it’s a community. Everyone looks out for each other, celebrates each other’s progress, and shows up with positive energy every single day. My daughter has grown so much in confidence, discipline, and strength since starting her jiu jitsu journey here. I truly can't recommend 1802 Jiu Jitsu enough—for individuals, kids, a
I honestly can't say enough good things about this place. Coach Derryck has really set up an amazing gym and the coaches there are really fantastic. The previous location (above KidVentures) was a bit cramped, so it's really nice that they were finally able to find a new location. Their new gym has a lot more space so the kids can spread out and they even put in some gym equipment so parents can work out while their kids are rolling. Coach Derryck really cares about the kids and works hard to instill a love for the sport in them. He is also very safety-conscious and teaches the kids how to do techniques in a safe way and never to cause any harm to their teammates. Coach Ric is also a fantastic addition and is so patient with the kids. They also have a fair promotion system and give stripes/belts out during promotions once a quarter, if you earn it. We've been members of this gym for over 1.5 years and our son has developed a love for th
How should I start? This place is just amazing. From the coaches to the people and kids training there, the atmosphere is so comfortable and open. Everyone is treated like family. Coach Derryck is so good with the toddlers and kids and his lovely wife, Leslie is such a great training partner. There’s no other place to bring the whole family for a great workout. I’m glad I’ve chosen this place to train because not only have I improved in my jiu jitsu, I gained lifelong friends that I consider family. Don’t pass this place up.
We can’t recommend this place enough — we’ve already shared it with many friends! My son used to be a very shy and sensitive child. When other kids were rough with him, he didn’t know how to respond and would often end up feeling upset. One of the main reasons we started Jiu Jitsu was to help him build confidence — and the results have truly exceeded our expectations. After just a few months of training, the transformation has been amazing. He is more confident, more aware of his body, and carries himself with a completely different presence. What stands out the most is that he is no longer seen as an easy target. Other kids can sense his confidence now, and situations where he used to get picked on have naturally stopped. It’s not about being aggressive at all — it’s about having the confidence to stand his ground and the ability to protect himself if needed. That alone has made a huge difference in his day-to-day life. The coaches are
I mean I own a martial arts school in the area and I still bring my kids and train jujitsu here, what else is there to say 😂 1802 is great and whether it’s kids or adults your kids are going to get all the benefits of a highly qualified instructor who can even break it down for kids. I’ve seen jujitsu teachers who can’t teach kids and it hurts to watch. Watching Professor Henry teach my kiddo sold me he is the real deal. And I just all around love the training environment, great place to train!
