⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A One-of-a-Kind Experience at Essentials Jiu Jitsu!

My 14-year-old cousin( Miriam ) from Portugal recently visited New York City for vacation, but as a dedicated and high-level jiu-jitsu athlete, she wanted to maintain her training while abroad. We’re incredibly grateful to have found Essentials Jiu Jitsu, where she had the opportunity to train for two days — and what an unforgettable experience it turned out to be!

From the moment she walked through the doors, she was welcomed with warmth, professionalism, and an incredible sense of community. Jonathan "JT" Torres, the owner, is not only a world-class athlete( 2-time World Champ / 4-time black belt ) but also an incredibly humble, kind, and approachable person who sets the tone for the entire gym. His passion for the sport and mentorship is truly inspiring, and it radiates through every aspect of the academy.

The instructors were attentive, skilled( thei
My 9 year old has been training at EJJ since last year. The academy is an incredibly welcoming place with a strong sense of community and camaraderie.
Professor JT is a world champion, and an active competitor at the highest levels of the sport (both gi and no-gi), consistently inspiring his students with world-class performances. JT's success is made possible by his extraordinary work ethic - something that he tirelessly preaches and cultivates in his classes. To see his dedication and joy in walking 8-year old beginner students through the nuances of a move is truly inspirational.
The EJJ coaches and staff are amazingly friendly, helpful, and passionate about the sport. They are constantly pushing the kids to give their utmost effort, and strive to be their very best - technically and emotionally. I have spoken to numerous EJJ parents, and they all attest to the incredible transformations their kids undergo after some time at th
I do judo and was in town visiting family. My cousins go here and asked me to join their intermediate class on a Saturday. I went in and the staff was very friendly and had no issues with me hopping into the class with them. They provided me a belt to use for the class. The class was awesome and it was great to learn more ground specific training. Students were friendly and welcoming when we were sparring. The facility is very nice and high quality all around. Large mats to fit big classes. Would definitely come back to train if I'm ever in town again or if I lived in the area.
Came in visiting from California--brown belt, been training ~7 years--and got absolutely destroyed (in the best way).

Left the mats questioning my life:
"Bro... do I even know jiu-jitsu?"
"Should I just move here?"
"I should probably go home before my wife gets mad at me for training all day."

Seriously though, amazing room. Everyone was super friendly, respectful, and very safe to roll with. The gym is really clean, and the level is high.
Different training partners from white to black and ages from young competitor monsters to hobbyist parents.

Chazz was the black belt coach that day--welcoming guy and great instruction. You can tell there's a strong culture and attention to detail.
Highly recommend stopping by if you're in the area. Just make sure you check their rules/ etiquette beforehand--pretty standard stuff (white gis only from what I saw, trimmed nails, good hygiene, etc.).
Will definitel
I have been training at this facility for a while now and it is simply world class. I have visited and trained at a number of jiu jitsu facilities over the years and nothing beats Essential Jiu Jitsu. From the instruction all the way to the cleanliness of the facility it is all top notch. To top it all off, the training partners are excellent and friendly. These are just some of the reasons I keep coming back from Canada to train here again and again over several years now. I can’t recommend this gym enough. Highly recommend!
I started at the beginning of the year at the age of 45. I have always wanted to train BJJ but never got myself up to actual start. I am so glad I did as its truly addicting. The entire staff at Essential is awsome. Professor JT Torres, Coaches Nick, Nate, Sam, Brad and Erik are all amazing and I hope to train at this amazing academy for years to come.

The absolute best part of Essential are my classmates. BJJ is hard, its an amazing work out and grueling at times, but the guys I train with are as suppostive of a group as you will find. I think that has been the biggest surprise to me. If you are a little older, don't let that stop you, its truly never too late to learn and Essential is the best place to do it.
