The atmosphere is inclusive and genuinely welcoming. There’s no judgment here, only encouragement. Whether you're a seasoned athlete or stepping onto the mats for the first time, you’ll feel right at home. The instructors are not only deeply knowledgeable in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but they also emphasize the art of technique over brute strength or speed. This approach fosters a safer, more respectful training environment where injuries are minimized and learning thrives. It’s a place where discipline meets compassion. With classes running from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., the schedule accommodates early risers and night owls alike. But what truly sets this academy apart are the connections forged on the mats. The camaraderie, the shared growth, the mutual respect—it all transforms training partners into family. If you or someone you know is curious about Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, or self-defense, I wholeheartedly recommend Gustavo Machado BJJ in downtow
We absolutely love Gustavo Machado Jiu-Jitsu! My 5-year-old has been attending and it’s been such a positive experience. The gym is always clean and welcoming, and Professor Luan is incredible with the kids, patient, encouraging, and great at keeping them engaged while they learn. He not only teaches jiu-jitsu, but also so much discipline, focus, and respect. My husband also trains here and is loving it! Thais at the front desk is always so friendly and kind, making every visit a pleasure. Highly recommend this academy for both kids and adults. It’s a wonderful community and a great place to train, grow, and connect as a family!
Gustavo Machado BJJ Sarasota is so much more than just a place to train—it’s a community. Here, people come together to learn jiu-jitsu in a welcoming, friendly, and supportive environment. Friendships are built on trust and mutual respect, with the understanding that we’re all here to help each other grow. Our shared goal is to strengthen both mind and body. It’s truly a family atmosphere. Professor Luan creates a space where kids learn respect, discipline, and self-defense, while adults find a supportive team that pushes them to be their best. I’ve been a member for over two years now, and it’s still my favorite place to start the day. I love Professor Luan’s quick mat chats and the life lessons he shares—reminders we can all take with us beyond the mats.
I’ve been to many schools in Sarasota and in other towns and this is by far my favorite. Few jiu jitsu schools work on stand up takedowns and the mats are so fantastic that even when you fall they break your fall. I did a bit of wrestling in college, but it wasn’t till I came here that my wrestling really started to grow. Professor Luan and the rest of the crew there are always nice and welcoming. Even after long breaks I always come back. After every class Professor gives a motivating speech that has helped inspire me and I’ve heard the same from other students in our day to day life. It’s one of the only gyms I’ve been to where I not only am excited to go back and train, but to sit and chat with the coach or the rest of the members there. You’ll regularly see students pop in during the day just to sit and talk. It’s a fantastic gym. Would highly recommend. Not only will you learn good technique, but you’ll find a great community of pe
We absolutely love this jiu-jitsu school. Our daughter hasn’t just been learning how to defend herself, she’s learning confidence, patience, discipline, and respect. The coaches teach jiu-jitsu as a philosophy of life, not just a sport. They speak to the kids with so much thoughtfulness and wisdom, and the atmosphere here feels safe, uplifting, and truly supportive. We’ve seen a real change in her: she stands taller, listens better, and handles frustration more calmly. She looks forward to every class. We are genuinely grateful for this place and for the instructors who put their hearts into what they do.
We’ve been part of this Jiu-Jitsu academy for about a year and a half now, and it has been such a blessing for our family. Both my husband and my son have grown so much—not only in their skills on the mat, but also in their character and confidence. They’ve become stronger, more disciplined, and more secure in their identity. One of the things we appreciate the most is that the professor is a Christian, and you can truly see those values reflected in the way he teaches, encourages, and mentors his students. The environment is uplifting, respectful, and motivating. We are so grateful for this academy and highly recommend it to anyone looking for excellent training, a supportive community, and a place that builds both body and spirit.
