Excellent experience! I started training in jiu-jitsu as a 40-yr-old woman with no martial arts history, & this is one of the healthiest things I’ve done for myself - psychologically & physically. Training in jiu-jitsu is the perfect way to gain confidence, become empowered, increase stamina, & build strength & flexibility - all while having fun. I wish I’d started 30 yrs ago. Gracie Combatives classes have a clear-cut structure. This is a straightforward & helpful way to learn, as I always check the calendar to know what lesson we’ll cover each day. I appreciate that a membership at this gym includes access to the highly detailed instructional videos taught by the Gracies, which are great to watch before class to prepare oneself, & are a perfect companion to Coach Jim’s awesome classes. I recommend Gracie Combatives classes as a starting place for most adults, even if you don’t feel qualified yet. The facilities here are always clean.
Training at Lakewood Jiu Jitsu has been a great experience and exactly what I was hoping for in a BJJ/GJJ gym. The Gracie Combatives program is incredibly effective, and its structured curriculum sets it apart - each lesson builds logically, making it easy to learn and apply. Another huge advantage is the Gracie University system. Having access to video resources allows me to review techniques outside of class, reinforcing what we learn on the mat and helping me progress faster. Professor Medley is an amazing instructor. His depth of knowledge, passion for teaching, and ability to break down techniques make every class engaging and valuable. He creates a welcoming and supportive environment where all students, regardless of experience, can thrive and have fun! The community at Lakewood Jiu Jitsu is amazing, and I look forward to every class. The students here are friendly, supportive, and make training even more enjoyable. If you’re loo
Lakewood jiu-jitsu academy is an excellent martial arts studio. This studio has conveniently relocated (as of March 2025) on Alameda across from the Denver Federal Center Gate 7 (the south gate, next to the post office). The new studio is more spacious and is being furnished with more amenities. I'm fond of Lakewood Jiu Jitsu Academy's focus on self-defense (as opposed to primarily sport jiu jitsu) and commitment to the Gracie system of jiu-jitsu. Jim Medley has a great depth of experience and focused teaching style that meets each student at their level. I highly recommend this studio for anyone looking to get started in jiu-jitsu or who wants to refine their technique. Also, check out the new Samurai Smoothie bar coming in May!
I have throughly enjoyed training at Lakewood Jiujitsu Academy. Coming from an MMA background, Initially I was disappointed to learn that LJJA does not endorse grappling/rolling until combatives (the basics) are mastered. This however is actually a beautiful hallmark of Jim Medley's school, in that one must first learn perfect technique before potentially grappling, thereby putting your saftey first on the streets, as well as that of your training partner on the mats. Every technique I learned at my previous school has been vastly improved upon already in my short time at LJJA because the techniques are taught perfectly over time, rather than sloppily once or twice so you can start grappling. Professor Jim has a passion for his students, their safety, and their growth as jiu-jitsu practitioners. He is also very professional, punctual and structured in his classes. You can expect to never have a "so what do you all want to work on tonigh
Jim is a legit Gracie blackbelt with a black belt in Japanese jiujitsu as well and years of experience in law enforcement. His authentic appreciation for the essential self-defense aspect of Gracie jiu-jitsu ensures you learn jiu-jitsu that is effective for survival in the real world, not just a sport competition. And as a new academy, you get unparalleled personal attention at a rate that is unbeatable. I'd jump on this opportunity if you've been thinking about giving bjj a try and want a workout that is fun, challenging, and could save your life. Oss!
I am honored to have the privilege know Professor Jim Medley. I have taken his training lessons in Jiu Jitsu and defensive tactics. The techniques have been safe and effective in Use of Force encounters. This training has been very helpful for my safety and well being. I am an experienced veteran police officer of several years and I can attest the training received by Prof. Medley is highly effective. Prof. Medley has many years of experience, which is evident with his professionalism. Prof. Medley is passionate with the upmost genuine patience and maintains appropriate expectations that challenge all learners of different age groups. Prof. Medley is eager to share his knowledge for the improvement of others. You will not regret receiving training from Prof. Medley as it is top tier instruction.
