I’ve been training with Joe and Ken, the founders and coaches at Lycan Jiu Jitsu, for about two years, in both Gi and No-Gi classes. I’ve grown and learned a lot in that time, and would highly recommend checking out Lycan. Joe focuses on practical techniques with multiple variations, which is helpful for knowing what to do in different scenarios. He brings a very down-to-earth, encouraging approach, rolls with students of all levels, from white belts to higher belts, and gives personalized feedback. Ken has a great teaching style focused on concepts and fundamentals. He helps you understand the “why” behind each position or technique, not just the steps. The training environment is welcoming and supportive, with a mix of beginners and advanced practitioners and plenty of higher belts to learn from. As a smaller person, I appreciate that there are training partners of all sizes. Both Joe and Ken clearly care a lot about their students an
I've trained Jiu Jitsu for just over four years, starting out with coach Joe from my very first class. I feel so fortunate to have found him as my first coach—he's very welcoming and understanding and cares a lot about the wellbeing of his students. He is encouraging and makes class fun, while pushing us to work our hardest and to stay consistent with our progress. Coach Ken is also an excellent teacher. He really helps folks fine tune details of certain moves and find what works well for their body type and style. I'm looking forward to the growth of our program with a new women's class starting next week! Everyone on our team are very considerate training partners, but it will be great to have a women's only space as well. Drop by for an open mat—Friday evenings or Saturday mornings!
Coach Joe and Coach Ken are incredibly knowledgeable and kind people. I’ve had the pleasure of being coached by these two for almost 4-5 years and they are very patient, technical, and are pure jiu jitsu nerds who love to think about and work through complex jiu jitsu issues. Not only that but they are genuinely caring and support their students on and off the mat. Also, the community at Lycan is top tier! Very welcoming and supportive with a good mix of men and women, and experienced and newer practitioners. I highly recommend this gym!
Coach Joe has built an incredible jiu jitsu community that feels welcoming to everyone, from total beginners to seasoned practitioners. He puts an immense amount of time into his students—both on and off the mats—and always goes above and beyond. He’s the kind of coach who’d give you the shirt off his back. Coach Ken is great- he teaches the fun Monday/Friday night classes. Open mat is Saturday at 10am
Joe and Ken are both phenomenal jiu jitsu instructors who cultivate a welcoming environment to learn the sport. This is a great place to start your jiu jitsu journey if you’re new, and also a great place to grow and progress. They decided to start their own gym after having a large team at pacific ring sports for many years. I grew a lot during my time there, learning a ton from both Joe and Ken. I highly recommend this gym!
I have been training with Joe and Ken for over four years. They are not only extremely skilled and devoted to the art of jiu jitsu, but they are the nicest people who know how to cultivate a great environment for learning. Their new school is in a great location right near Berkeley Bowl, with plenty of parking spots. Highly recommend for anyone looking to train or drop in for open mat.
