Dom Hoskins has created a safe and welcoming environment for anyone interested in training Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu. My four-year-old son, my eight-year-old daughter, my husband in his thirties, and myself, a woman in my thirties, have all been able to find great joy in learning this sport. None of us have had any sports experience in the past. I, in particular, had a lot of fear and skepticism about getting on the mat. I had no confidence in myself. However, Dom and Scott are both terrific teachers with deep knowledge and patience and have helped guide each of us into leaning into our own potentials. Now, after seven months of training, I just competed in my first BJJ competition, overcoming some real anxiety and personal blocks. This gym has an overall friendly atmosphere where everyone helps each other, from the white belts to the black belts
My experience at Dominat10n Jiu Jitsu has been fantastic. I discovered this gym through a friend and have been attending their women's self-defense class on Sundays whenever possible. Before joining, I had no prior experience, and I was also navigating the challenges of being 4 months postpartum. Despite feeling nervous initially, Dom and everyone at the gym have been incredibly welcoming and supportive throughout. The atmosphere at Dominat10n Jiu Jitsu is both enjoyable and patient. The class is structured in a way that even newcomers like myself don't feel overwhelmed. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning self-defense or jiu jitsu!!
Dom runs a fantastic program that is ideal for all BJJ practitioners regardless of where they are in their journey. I would most definitely recommend Dominat10n to anyone curious about starting jiu jitsu or for any existing practitioners who are looking for a new gym or just to cross train. I can't give enough praise to the atmosphere that Dom has set for all who step through the doors. His dedication to jiu jitsu shows through his coaching, and is ideal for both hobbyist and those looking to compete. Any apprehension to step on the mats at Dominat10n will quickly dissipate as you'll see that the guy who runs the show will always have your back! OSS!
After trying out a few different BJJ gyms, this is the spot. Dom and Scott are amazing coaches. Dom's instruction is clear and his ability to point out the subtlest nuances in every move is incredible. Not only is their instruction great but they are so very perspective when watching students drill, giving excellent feedback on how to improve. And not only are the coaches great but all the upper belts are so helpful. I look forward to getting smashed by upper belts (Hi, Alex), because they always give me great feedback on what I was doing wrong and how I can improve. Finally, the whole crew is great. One of the reasons I started doing Jiu-Jitsu because I wanted to connect to a community of great people. Everyone at Dominat10n is super warm, welcoming, chill, and encouraging. And they can fight.
My daughter and I decided to start Jiu Jitsu together for her last year and half before going to college. We looked at 3 gyms in the Lamorinda/ Walnut Creek area. We chose Dom Hoskins because he offered the best combination of 1) creating a welcoming environment for beginners of all ages (me 53 and my daughter 17) and 2) a curriculum providing strong foundational teaching suited to the needs of beginners and advanced students. Fast forward a year and a half, my daughter is a blue belt, and we got the opportunity to make great friends of all ages and even compete a little together in a local tournament. Dom has built a special group of people that have made very special memories for me with my daughter that I will cherish forever.
I'm a 50 something and have been a part of this gym since March 2022. It's been a fantastic journey that is a key part of my health and fitness regime. You will learn so much about yourself; it’s not all physical, there’s an intellectual and psychological component too. Coach Dom is excellent, especially as he gets to know you and your goals; he stresses fundamentals and building upon technique. If its your first time, you’ll be humbled right away, but keep persevering and going to the classes each week. After 6-months, you’ll look back and realize you’ve got greater confidence and situational preparedness. The other students (Team) are super supportive and there’s just a natural and genuine vibe of humility, understanding, and “esprit de corps.” If you are not ready for that gym class experience, then consider doing private lessons with Dom. I could write a 3-page essay on why this gym is just the best, but just sign up for an intro cl
