I've trained Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for over a decade (with a tiny amount of striking thrown in here and there.) And I'll be honest: if you're shopping around for a place to start training, or a new home, I'm not sure I could recommend a better place to train than KATA. The gym is clean and hygenic, the instruction is top-notch, the vibe is warm and welcoming, and the gym's strong focus on technical sparring over brute force means you learn faster and get injured less. Oh, and there's a shower so you don't have to drive home gross, and a free parking lot. That's the short version. For those of you who are more detail-orientated (like me), I figured I'd dive a little deeper into some specifics of why I love training here. (Be warned, I'm not good at keepings things brief!) In my eyes, here's what really sets KATA apart from your average MMA/BJJ gym: First, the tight focus on technical instruction as opposed to brute force. Lots of gyms give
I’ve trained at several jiu-jitsu gyms, but KATA stands out as my favorite. I’ve often struggled with understanding the concepts and techniques of jiu-jitsu, but Professor Anthony’s methodical and engaging teaching style made all the difference. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned athlete, the techniques and concepts he teaches will dramatically improve your overall game. One of the things I appreciate most about Professor Anthony is his commitment to developing well-rounded athletes. He integrates stand-up and wrestling techniques, something that wasn’t emphasized at other traditional jiu-jitsu gyms I’ve attended. With decades of experience, Professor Anthony knows what works best and constantly evolves his own game while training with his students. At first, I found it challenging to grasp some of the concepts he taught, but the way he structures his classes—using specific drills and positional sparring—along with his patience and
Kata Dojo is an amazing place to learn and train Jiu-jitsu. As a beginner to Jiu-jitsu, I was worried that I would be overwhelmed. It was just the opposite: Coach Nate, Coach Scott and Professor Anthony were so warm and welcoming, I felt right at home. The other students were so nice and helpful, I felt like a part of the family immediately. As for the training, it's top-notch. I may be a beginner at Jiu-jitsu, but I've been around martial arts and gyms for most of my life. And I've been a teacher myself for many years. So I know how rare it is to find training that is well though out, with a clear pedagogy and progression, rather than just random techniques and tips. These guys know their stuff and they CARE about their students and their growth. Whether you're a beginner or a veteran, this is the place to train.
The gym is exceptionally clean and well-maintained, which makes training sessions comfortable and enjoyable. It's a huge plus to have access to clean showers after a rigorous class. Great for beginners and advanced students. If you’re looking for a place to start or continue your jiu-jitsu journey, I can't recommend KATA enough. Sensei Anthony Caito has been instrumental in my jiu-jitsu journey. His ability to break down complex concepts into understandable and immediately applicable techniques has profoundly improved my skills. His teaching style is not only effective but truly inspiring. With the combination of excellent facilities, a supportive community, and top-notch coaching makes KATA the ideal place for anyone serious about learning and growing in the art of jiu-jitsu.
Took the women’s self defense class on Sunday and couldn’t have left feeling more empowered and confident. This was my first time taking a jiu jitsu class, it was so much fun and such a welcoming atmosphere! I was coming from out of town and joining friends for the class but would definitely be a regular if I lived around the area! Anthony and Nate run the gym together and are such skilled instructors. They immediately make you feel like part of the community. The classes are for anyone and everyone from all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Truly such an awesome experience and would highly recommend for anyone who has trained before to newbies like me who knew nothing before taking a class!
I’ve been training at this school for a little over three months now, and I can’t say enough great things about it! From day one, everyone has been incredibly welcoming and supportive. The instructors are extremely knowledgeable, patient, and always willing to help, whether you’re a complete beginner or have experience. The location and variety of classes is also great. Not only have I learned so much in such a short time, but I’ve also developed a real passion for martial arts thanks to the amazing environment here. The training is top-notch, the community is great, and the overall atmosphere makes you want to keep coming back. If you’re looking for a place to train Jiu-Jitsu, improve your skills, and be part of an awesome community, I highly recommend this school!
