The Side Control Dominance Manual: How to Pin and Finish

If the Mount is the most dominating position, then Side Control is the most versatile.

In Side Control, you have a massive array of attacks, multiple ways to transition (to the back, mount, or north-south), and it’s often much easier to maintain than the mount because you don't have to worry about a large bridge throwing you off balance.

However, many beginners treat side control like they're just "lying on top" of their partner. If you feel like your opponent is constantly putting their knee back in (the "reguard") or shrimping away effortlessly, you are missing the key mechanics of a true pin.

In this manual, we’re going to turn your side control from a temporary rest stop into a finishing position.

The Core Principles of a Soul-Crushing Side Control

1. Cross-Face and Underhook (The Basics)

If you don't have these two things, you don't have side control.
  • The Cross-Face: Use your far-side arm to reach under their head and drive your shoulder into their jaw. This forces them to look away from you, killing their ability to move their hips.
  • The Underhook: Your other arm stays under their far-side armpit. This prevents them from "turning into you" and taking your back.

2. Kill the Hips (The Knee-to-Hip Rule)

Your near-side knee should be glued to their hip. If there is a 1-inch gap between your knee and their waist, they will slide their knee into that gap and reguard.

3. Chest-to-Chest Pressure

Don't be a "light" person on top. Melt into them. Your weight should be concentrated on their sternum, making it physically difficult for them to take a full breath.

4. Head Manipulation

Where the head goes, the body follows. If you can keep their head turned away from you with your shoulder pressure, their shrimping power drops by 80%.

3 Variations for Every Reaction

A. The Basic Cross-Body

Standard 90-degree pin.
  • Best For: Stabilization and waiting for them to make a mistake.

B. Kesagatame (Scarf Hold)

Turning your hips and grabbing their head/arm like a headlock.
  • Best For: Heavy pressure on their chest and attacking the far-side arm.
  • Warning: Be careful of them taking your back if you don't keep their head pulled up.

C. North-South

Swinging your head to their feet.
  • Best For: Catching people who lead with their knees too much, or hunting for the North-South Choke.

Finishing the Fight from Side Control

The Kimura

The most dangerous shoulder lock from the side.
  • Focus: Isolate the arm, get your figure-four grip, and "paint the floor" toward their head.

The Brabo (Darce) Choke

When they try to turn into you (the "underhook battle"), they often leave their neck exposed.
  • Focus: Shoot your arm deep under their neck and lock your bicep while squeezing their head into their chest.

The Bread Cutter (Paper Cutter) Choke

A devastating Gi choke.
  • Focus: Use one hand on their collar and drop your elbow to the mat next to their ear. It's fast, mean, and very high percentage.

Summary

Side Control isn't a place to rest—it's a place to work. If you find yourself holding side control for 3 minutes without moving, you're missing the point. Control the head, kill the hips, and start hunting the arms.
