If you’re a parent looking for the right coach or the right place to send your kiddo(s) to for BJJ, this is it! My teenage son started classes almost a year ago here and he fell in love with BJJ almost immediately! Coach Jestyn is a remarkable coach! He’s kind, approachable, wonderful at relaying new concepts in a way that’s easily understandable, and it’s very clear he has a passion for BJJ and for teaching it to others The others in class have also been incredibly welcoming! If your kid is 15+ they usually go to the adult classes, which made me a littler nervous at first. But, everyone was so kind to him! They instructed him if they were a higher rank than him and genuinely made him feel like he fit in right away The community-feel here can’t be beat. The prices, also, cannot be beat - especially considering the amount of classes you can go to every week (gi and no-gi). There are Friday classes with Chris (who’s also a Black Belt), an
Can’t recommend this place enough. Coach Jestyn is an excellent instructor with a deep background in martial arts, as a black belt in BJJ as well as in Judo. Classes consist of equal parts of warm up, technique, and rolling / sparring. Instruction is suited for all levels, from day 1 beginner to the most advanced practitioners. Everyone at the school is incredibly friendly and welcoming, and genuinely happy to have another training partner. With the affordability of membership dues you will not find a better place to train. I encourage anyone who has ever been interested in trying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or who is looking for a new school to absolutely check out Nova Ryu!
I have been to a lot of BJJ schools around the country, and this is by far my favorite place to train. The coach is not only extremely knowledgeable in BJJ, but also holds a Judo black belt as well, so the instruction you receive is a very well rounded grappling system that can be applied to the sport and self defense. Most importantly he is a great teacher with a great attitude who fosters a positive environment in the gym where both hobbyist and competitive students both thrive. My favorite part is the kids program, my kids participate and love attending. It is a great environment and this gym has helped make Bjj a huge part of my family’s culture. I am super grateful to Jestyn and Nova Ryu family and I look forward to each session I get to attend
If you're looking for a fantastic place to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Nova Ryu BJJ is an excellent choice. Coach Jestyn excels not only in teaching jiu-jitsu techniques but also in working with kids, creating a welcoming environment for all ages. The school fosters a strong sense of family and camaraderie among its members, making it a great team to be a part of. Whether you are just starting or advancing your skills, Nova Ryu BJJ is a supportive and positive training environment.
I have nothing but positive things to say about the Nova Ryu Academy and Coach Jestyn. The first thing that comes to mind about Nova is that it is a safe environment and created for every size and shape body. When I began my Jiu Jitsu journey I weighed in at 333lbs. Coach Jestyn was one of the few people who went out of their way to ensure I had a training partner and always made me feel welcome. Many years later I can proudly tell you that he was one of the reasons that I continued my journey and why I became passionate about Jiu Jitsu. I wouldn't recommend this Academy if you are looking to be the top dog beast in every roll and that wants to be the Ultimate fighter. I would highly recommend this Academy if you are looking for a place to develop your skills with positivity and unconditional support.
Nova Ryu is a great place to get a workout and learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu! I've had the chance to train at handful of excellent BJJ gyms over the years and I can say that the instruction you will get here is right up there with the best, but at a fraction of the price of some of the bigger name gyms. Coach Jestyn makes jiu jitsu fun and accessible for everyone regardless of your age, skill level, experience, or ability. I always feel safe and respected in class and in sparring. If you are in the Tacoma area and are looking to give BJJ a try, I highly recommend Nova Ryu!
