Coach Jesse cultivates an inclusive and positive culture for learning for all genders and body types at Defiance Jiu Jitsu. The coaching team provides clear breakdowns of both beginner and advanced techniques and the members of the Academy are welcoming and helpful. My family participates in both the adult and kid’s programs and I can attest that the coaching is engaging and fun in both programs. The facilities are kept clean and there are clear guidelines on hygiene for the health and safety of Academy members. My family came to Defiance Jiu Jitsu searching for healthy physical outlets that would resonate with our children. As I watched my 4-, 6-, and 8-year-old children on the mats and the care the coaches took to help each student learn fundamental movement, mobility and control techniques, I began to realize that even I could start Jiu Jitsu at 51. I began my Jiu-Jitsu journey here about four months ago, and it's changed my life. I walked in, nervous, having never done a martial art before and was met with a friendly team, insightful coaching, and a very high standard of hygiene and facility cleaning. Professor Jesse and the coaching staff break down fundamental to advanced techniques in a detailed and logical fashion. They are always accepting of clarify questions and understand how to deliver techniques in clear, direct steps. The gym offers all levels of classes from competition to beginner which allows a student to grow as a hobbyist, fitness enthusiast, and/or competitor to their preference. This gym take their core philosophy, a rising tide raises all boats, to heart. Many times while trying to figure out a move, the guidance and insight of the upper belts has been the difference between success and failure. My husband and 2 boys (7 & 10) have been training here for the past several years. After watching from the sidelines I decided to try BJJ on for myself. I love that Defiance offers women only classes which was honestly the only way I even considered trying it out. It didn't take long for me to become hooked and expand into the co-ed classes. There are lots of class day/time options which makes it easy to work it in with work and family life. Everyone is super welcoming and encouraging and I appreciate all the instructions from coaches and upper-belts. The facility is clean and functional but also has a lot of personality. I love the Defiance team, and if you come to more than one class it will quickly become your second family. <3
I’ve been training Jiu Jitsu for roughly 6* years now. I started out at a different school and needed to find a new gym to match my work schedule and near my residence. I came across Defiance because they’re affiliated with the school I started with and I was looking to continue to build on my journey with the same values I started with. Defiance did that and then some. Stu and Jesse run an amazing, clean, and friendly facility. Every new face is greeted with a smile by these two and give a warm welcome. I’ve been at this location for about 2 years now and I can’t think of another place I would rather train. You become family here and won’t stop returning.
Dropped in to train while traveling and had an awesome time. Jesse (the owner and head instructor) was friendly and taught an a great class. The gym members were all friendly and I had a great time training with them. As a black belt and gym owner myself, finding like minded people that share a positive culture around jiujitsu is important to me and I have definitely found that at Defiance Jiujitsu. If you are in the area, I strongly suggest training here.
We first found defiance jiu jitsu for our girl’s roughly two years ago. I wanted to get them versed in a martial art that is applicable to real life defense. Coach Jesse is a great Leader who focuses on form and function, rather than glitz and glam. We very much appreciate all of the coaches attention to detail and their commitment to excellence. I have come to appreciate the gym so much that I have begun attending classes myself. I would highly recommend Defiance Jiu Jitsu to anyone in the greater Tacoma area looking for a quality facility to epithet begin or continue their Jiu Jitsu journey.
