Update (October 2025) I have been at this academy since 2018. I have seen it grow and expand into something that I’m proud to be a part of. There are three things that make this place unique to any other jiu-jitsu academy; a warm community, a strong fundamental curriculum and the guidance that imbues from James Quan. Maven is a like of a small town where everybody knows your name. We celebrate each other’s successes on and off the mat. Attend birthday parties, graduations, donate to causes, give advice, or just hang out. We also know each other’s jiu-jitsu game just as close as we know our own. Which is good and bad. The community is created as soon as we walk through the door with a smile and a greeting. Before finding a place like Maven, I traveled to different parts of the world looking for the secret techniques of jiu-jitsu. I’ve been practicing for over 2 years at Maven and have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of my time at the academy! James has created a great culture and atmosphere that is welcoming to both beginners and experienced individuals in jiu-jitsu. He is a fantastic instructor who truly enjoys teaching and helping students develop, both in jiu-jitsu as well as personally. From the moment you walk in the door, you feel like part of a family and a community. There is a big focus on learning, and all of the instructors (Kevin, Nico, Daniel, Mike) and higher-level belts are more than willing to help you on every aspect of BJJ. I highly recommend Maven BJJ for anyone who wants to learn or increase their jiu-jitsu skills! You will love it!
(Update 2026) After training at Maven for 5 years I can confidently say that this Academy is unique and blows expectations out of the water. Every single person at this academy will go above and beyond to make you feel welcomed and to ensure that you understand what is being taught. The owner (James) is very personable and will do whatever it takes to make you feel comfortable. This school is focused on a deep understanding when it comes to Jiu Jitsu, competition is not expected nor required. The best thing about Maven Jiu-Jitsu is the sense of community and the exceptional instruction. Unlike many other academies, this isn’t just a place for physical training—it’s truly a learning environment. Everything feels designed to provide students with a supportive, positive, and challenging space to grow both physically and intellectually. The standards are incredibly high, and the coaches are genuinely dedicated to helping you develop a deep understanding of jiu-jitsu. What really stands out to me is the structured detailed curriculum that the coaches follow. Professor Quan writes his own curriculum and it shows. They teach the lessons with so much care and intention, making sure that everyone feels supported and valued. Maven Jiu Jitsu Academy has a fantastic learning environment with great coaches and helpful peers. I started with them as a total beginner, and they were so welcoming and inclusive, which made me feel very comfortable as a new student. They're really good at explaining lots of complicated self-defense techniques, the reasons for all the considerations, why you need to pay attention to certain things, etc. - I appreciate them a lot. They have classes for many levels and different ages, but as a beginner, I'll only speak about the beginner classes. For the "Fundamentals" class, they follow a curriculum with 2 new lessons per week, and you have the option of going in Monday or Tuesday for Lesson A and Wednesday or Thursday for Lesson B each week. You can even repeat the same lesson if you want more practice, which I think is very helpful because it's better to practice until the moves become muscle memory. If you can commit to regularly at
My son has been attending the kids Jiu jitsu classes here for about six months now. I have been thoroughly impressed with the staff and the other students/parents. The staff are amazing! The owner is a great guy and makes sure he welcomes you each practice. I appreciate the small gestures as you can tell the culture is built around respect. The other coaches are just phenomenal: excellent in working with the kids, they make practices engaging and fun, the moves are taught well and they evaluate the student's moves, and they know how to motivate and encourage them. It's an amazing place and I feel fortunate my kid will get to learn under their tutelage. Everyone is very encouraging and supportive - the parents included, which hasn't been my experience in other sports. They cheer on other kids and monitor their own kids' behavior.
