I can’t say enough good things about Vandry BJJ. Professor William is an experienced, well-versed, and highly technical instructor who truly understands the art of Jiu Jitsu. What makes his teaching unique is how he combines strong fundamentals and self-defense with his deep knowledge of health and holistic care. He genuinely cares about the longevity of his students, always mindful of helping them train effectively while taking care of their bodies. Professor William goes above and beyond—he not only teaches excellent technique but also helps students work through aches and pains, making sure they can continue learning and growing in a healthy way. You can feel his dedication and care the moment you walk in. This isn’t just a school, it’s a community. Vandry BJJ offers a family-like atmosphere where people support each other both on and off the mats. If you’re looking to learn a rewarding life skill, build strong self-defense abilities
Vandry’s BJJ has been an important part of my life and my family's for over two decades. I first stepped onto the mats as a beginner in 2000, and I never imaged the profound impact Professor Vandry and his students would have on me. Since then, I've had the privilege of watching my three children grow up at the academy, experiencing expert instruction and warm community. Even after training under Professor Vandry for so long, I'm still amazed at how much I have left to learn. His encyclopedic knowledge of techniques, his understanding of skeletal structure, the muscles and ligaments in the body, coupled with an uncanny ability to break down complex movements into easily grasped steps, teaches me something every week, even after all these years. Just when I think I've seen it all, I can walk into the gym and leave surprised. Beyond the mats, Professor Vandry and the team have provided life lessons for my children, teaching them disciplin
My two boys (13 and 15) have been training at Vandry Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for over a year now, and it has been a wonderful experience for our family. They both truly enjoy going to class and look forward to training every week. Beyond learning solid Jiu Jitsu skills, I’ve seen them gain much more confidence, discipline, and resilience. The instructors are knowledgeable, patient, and great with kids and teens. The environment is supportive, respectful, and very positive. We are very grateful to Vandry and the team for creating such a great place for kids to grow both physically and mentally. Highly recommend to any parents looking for a quality martial arts program for their children.
I’ve been training at Vandry Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for 18 years, earning my black belt in this welcoming academy that radiates positivity and safety. It’s the ideal spot to explore classical Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with a focus on defense and real-world applications, while seamlessly blending modern sport concepts. Professor William Vandry, a 6th-degree black belt under Master Carlos Machado (nephew of founders Carlos and Helio Gracie), delivers inspiring instruction with unmatched depth. This isn’t a tournament-driven school; it’s tailored for young professionals and families seeking top-tier training in a respectful environment that honors the art’s longevity. Key techniques include sneaky collar chokes from guard, versatile leg locks like ankle locks, heel hooks, knee bars, and half-guard foot locks, quick armbars, sweeps and passes for control, and robust defensive counters against submissions. Self-defense strategies emphasize practical
I have been at Vandry's for more than a decade and it is also where my Jiujitsu journey began. Austin has since had a influx of schools and great talents but I chose to stay because it has a hominess that modern BJJ gyms simply do not have. Instructor William is from a traditional lineage of Machados directly under Carlos and the gym is catered to a great group of day time professionals. I highly recommend this gym you're looking for kids class or friendly "roll" environment. William is a 6th degree instructor who understands the game's nuances more than many other run of the mill instructors. Safety is also a key factor as you choose your gym and this is certainly one of the safest environment and cleanest I have ever experienced.
