Started training here in jiu jitsu two years ago. Got some great coaches in varying weight brackets which is super helpful if you’re a smaller person. The hardest part is the first 2-3 months as you try to figure out what the major positions are, and how to use the moves we learn in class. Coaches Brian and Gabe contrast each other well, and always willing to help you figure out your weaknesses. If you’re interested in training to compete or just to learn a new skill, they have you covered. I wish there was a beginner-beginner class where new people could learn about some of the fundamentals for bjj (things like underhooks, leverage points, the major positions pros/cons). Currently some of those basics you gotta go learn on your own. The open mat Friday's are great cause the coaches will also show up, and you can get some input on things you’ve been struggling with. When people show up to class and then open mat, you can try things out
I joined John's Gym two years ago with zero experience in Jiu Jitsu. From that day forward I’ve never even considered going anywhere else. John’s gym is always clean, has a great vibe, and the instructors are excellent! Both the guys and girls who train here are friendly, respectful, and whether you’re a black belt or first day white belt they will make you feel welcome. There are no egos/drama—just a great community where everyone is here to learn, get a workout, and have fun. The owners, Kylie and James are some of the best people you’ll ever meet. We are a few weeks away from our first baby and I can’t wait to get her training with James who runs the kids classes. I’ve talked to him quite a bit and you can tell he loves teaching the kids and going to the competitions. Can't wait for that! I can’t recommend John’s Gym enough—it’s more than just a gym, it’s a community and one I plan to be a part of for a very long time! 10/10!
I first went to John's Gym on suggestion from a work acquaintance. I found the gym especially awesome! I find the instructors and fellow teammates encouraging and engaging. I found training in the stand-up striking arts of Boxing and Muay Thai increased my physical conditioning, striking skill, confidence and improved my focus and concentration. From time to time I also worked in some BJJ. The BJJ instructors are accomplished and the more experienced teammates provide timely and critical instructions. I am NOT a younger dude and enjoyed training with men and women of all ages (kids have their own times and events separate from the adults). Each person is treated with respect and provided with tons of opportunity to improve technique and skill level. I recommend John's Gym to EVERYONE. You will improve your physical and mental conditioning and gather some confidence and hands on experience in the fighting arts!
I had an incredible experience at John’s Gym Mixed Martial Arts and Jiu Jitsu in Austin! Ethan was an exceptional teacher, delivering world-class instruction with incredible attention to detail that truly elevated my training. The entire team and community were so welcoming, making me feel right at home from the moment I walked in. Whether you’re looking to train regularly or just drop in for a class, I highly recommend this gym. Don’t hesitate to check it out—you won’t be disappointed!
My son has been training at John's Gym for a few months now, and I couldn't be happier with the results. We initially enrolled him to help him with his focus and discipline, but the benefits have extended far beyond that. One of the most surprising and beneficial outcomes of his training has been how boxing has helped his baseball game. The footwork, hand-eye coordination, and rotational power he's developed in boxing class have translated directly to the baseball field. His swing has become more powerful and his throws are more accurate. It's truly amazing to see the crossover benefits. The coaches at John's Gym are fantastic. They are patient, knowledgeable, and create a positive and encouraging environment for all the students. Shout out to Kylie too, who was patient getting us signed up and super communicative. ;) I highly recommend John's Gym to anyone looking for a top-notch mixed martial arts and especially, boxing for kids.
Three months into our membership here - whole family attends. This is the most welcoming family oriented gym in Austin. My kids are progressing. I'm getting in better shape. The atmosphere is inviting and there is a real sense of community. I would recommend this gym to people of all levels - from beginners to black belts. There are competitors and beginners in every class and everyone is there to help you achieve your goals. Big fan.
