I have been practicing martial arts for 17 years, so I have had my fair share of experiences with various schools. When newcomers ask me for advice on how to choose a school, I always emphasize three key factors: solid technique, representation of women at higher belt levels, and a supportive and welcoming community. IJJ not only meets but exceeds these criteria, and this has been my jiu-jitsu home for the past six years. Firstly, the foundation of any exceptional BJJ school is its dedication to teaching and honing effective and safe skills. The level of technical expertise at IJJ is outstanding. Head Coach Gabriel is not only one of the best practitioners I have ever trained with, but he is also quite skilled at teaching a variety of approaches to the game of BJJ. Whether you're a novice eager to learn the basics or a seasoned practitioner striving for mastery, Gabe is a sage guide. Secondly, I always recommend that people seek a schoo
I've been training at IJJ for two years now and I have learned so much from Professor Gabriel Martins. Never in a million years did I ever think that I would be capable of taking up Jiu-Jitsu, let alone be able to perform/compete the way that I do today! IJJ provides a welcoming, and family friendly atmosphere that truly encompasses the belief that Jiu-Jitsu is for everyone! Unlike many gyms, Professor Gabriel teaches not only the Adults class, but ALL of the kids classes as well and is a phenomenal kids coach. He takes the time to cater to all of his students and his instruction is very detailed. Adult classes are 2 hours long. This includes warm ups, learning 2-3 techniques, drilling those techniques, specific training, then the last 30 mins for rolling!
We absolutely love this jiujitsu program! It’s a wonderful place for kids supportive, structured, and fun. What makes it even more special is the strong sense of family and community. The instructor (Gabriel) does an incredible job not only teaching the kids but also creating a safe environment where everyone feels welcome and included. One of the things I appreciate most is how they encourage older kids to interact with and support the younger ones. It’s great to see them learning from each other and growing together not just in their jiujitsu skills, but in confidence, respect, and teamwork. Our child is 4 years old and looks forward to every class, and we’ve seen such a positive impact. Highly recommend to any family looking for a place where kids can thrive physically, socially, and emotionally.
I truly believe this is the best BJJ gym in Austin. First and foremost, the facility is pretty large, and has cold ac, a shower and coach Gabe disinfects the mats before every class. Coach Gabe is a great instructor, he's teaching every class himself, and breaks down the techniques into bite sized bits, which is great for a beginner like myself. Besides, he is super easy to talk to, very down to earth, and always down to roll. The people training here are awesome too, everyone is here to learn and help each other improve, which may sound corny but you have to come see it yourself. Lastly if you read all this, you might as well come try a class, it's free and you have nothing to lose.
I am very glad I found this place to begin Jiu Jitsu! Instructor Gabriel Martins takes time to address each student individually during class, and he makes sure we are learning properly. I also bring my son to his Little Kids, and it is amazing to see how he works with the kids, Myself and my son look forward to class, and we are happy to be apart of the gym! I encourage anyone who is looking to start Jiu Jitsu to visit the gym! You be welcomed by a great instructor and class mates!
This Jiujitsu gym is a known hidden gem in Austin BJJ scene. Gabriel is an awesome instructor with a vast amount of knowledge both in gi and nogi. I have been practicing this art since 2010 and still feel like a rookie each time I take a private. James and Cafe are some of nicest instructors around with their own interpretation of the game. Lastly the gym has always been welcoming each time I visited and super safe to train in. Check this place out if you’re looking for a spot to focus on the art and want to avoid unnecessary fanfares.
