I love this gym! I started my Jiu Jitsu journey here about seven months ago, and have learned so much in such a short period of time. The instructors are friendly and deeply knowledgeable about the art. The classes are accessible yet challenging. And the members of this gym are all willing to help out newcomers as they begin their journey. From my first class on, I always felt welcomed! Raptor is also an affiliate of the Jiu Jitsu Company, an elite gym in Philadelphia. As a result, we get to attend weekend-long seminars and train at the Jiu Jitsu Company for free. I plan to continue training here as long as I'm in State College. I initially tried trial classes at all the other gyms in the area, and found that Raptor is by far the best of the bunch.
Our son started going to Raptor when he was 10 and he has had an amazing experience there. The coaches create such a welcoming environment for kids where the emphasis is on persevering and doing your best. They encourage the kids to focus on improvement rather than whether they win or lose, and there are a lot of valuable life lessons that go along with great jiu-jitsu coaching. The positive attitude of the coaches influences the kids as well, and the way the kids support each other in class is incredible. I'd highly recommend the kids class for kids of any experience level who are interested.
I recently dropped in for an open mat at Raptor Jiu Jitsu. I was able to roll with a few of their coaches (Jeremy, Jess, and Brian), and they were excellent—skilled, technical, and welcoming. Its is also very clear that their students are well taught and respectful. I have trained at a lot of different gyms and I can definitely say that the atmosphere at Raptor is super friendly which makes it easy for newcomers and visitors to feel comfortable right away. The facility itself is also very clean and well kept. Overall, Raptor Jiu Jitsu is a great gym and I’d highly recommend it to anyone in the State College area looking for a place to train.
Started here as a chubby 37 year old with no martial arts experience or background in any form of grappling/wrestling. The instructors do a phenomenal job of explaining everything and the curriculum is thoughtfully structured to always be building on itself, for any level of experience. The fundamentals program is perfect for someone like me who walked through the door with no prior training but is equally useful for experienced grapplers who really want focus on the details. I’m now 41 years old (and still kinda chubby) but I have personally learned and progressed so much because of the amazingly thoughtful, encouraging and supportive instructors - and maybe more importantly, the incredible training partners you will share the mat with. Everyone is kind and genuine and respectful with a focus on learning. I have managed to avoid any injuries from training in large part because Raptor places a huge emphasis on being a good training part
Choosing to train at Raptor has been one of the best decisions I've made in the last few years. The environment is welcoming, the instruction is top-notch, and the community of practitioners is fantastic. I've trained bjj for around 7 years now (much of that time outside of the state college area), and can unequivocally state that this school offers training that rivals the best out there, while still being fun and friendly. If you're looking to try the sport out, or you want to up your game with all of the details you can't find elsewhere in the area, you should definitely swing by.
My son loves going. The instructors are excellent and go above and beyond to assist him with his ADHD. The environment is clean and great location with free off-street parking. Tudek park and gym next door if you want to work out while your child attends class. Highly recommend this place over any other "Karate" place in town. Cost is reasonable and schedule is perfect for a busy evening or Sat. Quick text response if needed by instructor. Literally have a family feel. When my other son is 8 he will be joining, and we will be long term members.
