When I was looking for another gym to start BJJ again, I wanted to make sure that I found a welcoming environment that also pushed and motivated me. When I first called Waterfront MMA, Frankie invited me to come in and take a tour of the facility, participate, and meet others in a class before I made the decision to sign up. The facility is incredible, and you can tell a lot of time and effort have gone into making this place all that it is. I absolutely loved that I could experience more than just BJJ, including a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience and train in Muay Thai with a professional fighter! I'm so proud and thankful for my time and all that I have learned while training at Waterfront MMA and can't wait to be back on the mats again soon.
Joining the gym and training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with the owner Frankie and coach Sang was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I've been training there almost as long as it's been open and it has evolved and come a long way since its inception. There are all kinds of people from all different walks of life coming together to better themselves and each other. If you're thinking you want to try martial arts but doubt you're cut out for it or not in-shape enough for it, you'll find some people in the classes here who probably thought the same thing at first - you will be welcomed here and encouraged to grow.
If you want to train with people who will help you grow, regardless of your experience level, this is the place for you. When I first showed up, I was surprised to find a hugely diverse group who all supported one another and who instantly welcomed me into the family. I've learned a ton because the instructors are great at breaking down moves and drilling so we can nail the techniques. They really want everyone to succeed on and off the mat. As someone relatively new to Pittsburgh, I feel like I've really found a community at the Waterfront MMA Academy.
Amazing gym. Clean. Friendly. Fair pricing. Extremely welcoming to beginners and experienced martial artist alike. I myself was a beginner and I have learned so much and gained friends while doing it. I can’t imagine having learned at any other gym. If you’re considering trying out Jiu Jitsu or just moved here from another town and another gym… give them a try.
An amazing and diverse group of people to train, educate, and grow with. I was scared and nervous when I first joined and now I feel like family. I haven’t done any martial arts in over 15y, out of shape, and felt terrible about myself. I’m now taking BJJ, MT, and MMA classes and feel amazing it’s only been 5weeks. My kids are in the youth MMA and love it as-well. Stop down for a class, you won’t regret it!
As someone who had no experience prior, Waterfront MMA BJJ coaches did an excellent job teaching me the basics in a positive and patient learning environment. And not just the coaches either, but the other patrons were respectful to know I was a beginner and would help me with drills & movements when I needed it. This team of different stripes and belts, have now become my friends.
