While I grew up in Pittsburgh, I now live in Chicago. I took up BJJ a little over 3 years ago, and I always try to find a place to train when I travel for business or pleasure. Well, 3 years back as a "newbie" white belt I was scouring the internet for places to train while visiting family in Pittsburgh. At that time, the options were relatively very few. Fortunately, I was able to find Steel City Martial Arts (SCMA). My first time at SCMA, Sensei Sonny was very welcoming. He and his top-notch instructors teach a very technical style of BJJ under the auspices of the highly regarded and renown instructor Pedro Sauer. While very technical, the students at SCMA are as tough and as skilled as they come. However, you can really tell SCMA fosters a family environment. Although a nice guy, Sensei Achille tolerates no bad apples in his school! Since that first time over 3 years ago, I have trained at SCMA every time I have come back to Pittsbur
My decision to start training at Steel City Martial Arts (SCMA) has been one of the best decisions I have ever made for myself. My first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) class was the women's class. I was a little anxious walking in with no previous experience in martial arts, but SCMA quickly took all the anxiety away. The environment set by Lisa and Sensei Achille is positive and encouraging. The instruction is excellent. The facility is clean and organized. I have been training for 15 months. Initially, I signed up for 1 class a week, but now I train 4+ classes a week. Training at SCMA has changed my life. I am in-shape and more confident. If you are a woman and thinking about training in BJJ, please visit SCMA. Nora's women only class is a fantastic way to try out BJJ for the first time (and the first class is free, AWESOME!).
My two children and I all train in Jiu-Jitsu here, and we couldn’t be happier. I came from another school after my previous instructor passed away a few years ago and after trying several places, I struggled to find a school that felt like the right fit. From day one, Santino the owner, welcomed my family with open arms. Both of my sons absolutely love training here. The kids classes have an excellent instructor / student ratio, which is very important to me as a parent. Many of the higher belt moms and dads also have their children training here, creating a close-knit, family style environment where everyone knows and supports each other. I genuinely enjoy being part of this academy and highly recommend it.
If you're considering training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, this place should be the only one on your list. Sensei Achille's lineage is one of the best in the world--Black Belt, with first stripe, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (awarded by Pedro Sauer, a senior student of Helio and Rickson Gracie)-- and learning from someone so closely related to the roots of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is such a beautiful experience. A close second in the SCMA experience is the facility. It is kept very clean and maintained throughout the year, so no need to worry about a snow-packed parking lot in the Pittsburgh winters. The mats are firm and the locker rooms are very nice. The family atmosphere there & the students combine for a very friendly place and is as comforting as a school should be--because SCMA truly embodies what an ideal school should be.
I have been training here now for quite a few years, starting on the later side of my 30s. I drove by SCMA for years always wanting to start Jiu Jitsu, however I thought it may be like an MMA gym and being a working professional, thought it was for younger people. Finally, a friend from out of town told me I should try Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and that anyone can start at any age and you don’t have to be young to start and talked me in to it. When I finally stopped in 4 plus years ago and tried a class, I was blown away, but also filled with regret as I wish I would’ve stopped in years before. The people there were amazing, the class was outstanding, and the “rolling” after class was the best and most enjoyable workout I had in years. Many students that are there are business/working professionals that are my age and even older just looking to get in to good shape and stay in shape. If you are looking for a life change, and you hate going t
I had been training in many different dojos, in different cities and even in different countries. When I moved to Pittsburgh 5 years ago I was very fortunate to find Steel City and to be welcomed in the community of friends who enjoy training in various martial arts together. I started with Karate, got into BJJ and have ventured into Wrestling more recently. Sensei and Lisa Achille have created a very special place, with excellent instructors and a friendly atmosphere that allows everyone to train to their ability and motivation. Many of us (including women) compete successfully - with the great support of all instructors and fellow students. Since I started, the number of women on the mat has increased steadily to what is now quite a respectable group - which speaks volumes about the quality of the facility and the safe environment that enable us to feel comfortable and supported. If you are looking for the perfect dojo, this is it.
