My Husband and I have been training here for almost a year. I’m a 33 year old women and mother. I can’t speak for other gyms having only trained here, but my experience has been life-changing. At Vien Jiu Jitsu I feel: inspired, empowered, respected, safe, and humbled😅. Gee and April are an incredible coaching team who teach as well as they perform. They practice what they preach, and are always improving their jiu jitsu alongside everyone else on their mats. They truly care and will check in on you if you have to miss classes. If you’re just starting Jiu Jitsu, come here. If you’re interested in competing, come here. They’re growing their women’s programming ( I LOVE the women’s classes) and they’ve brought in great Judo and wrestling instructors. Then there’s everyone who comes to this gym! Gee and April’s attitude permeates through the gym. I love being around these people. They’re welcoming, encouraging, and fun. They’ll challenge y
Vien Jiu Jitsu is an incredible place to train! Gee and April are not only top-level instructors, competitors, and practitioners but also amazing people who bring so much light and energy to the community. I met April at a Grappling Getaways camp, and soon after, I joined Vien Jiu Jitsu—it was the best decision! Gee’s and April’s knowledge and efficiency make every class valuable, and all the instructors here are truly at the top of their game. The students are friendly, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the space itself is large, bright, safe, and clean. If you want to train with the best and become your best, this is the place to be!
When my fiance suggested I should learn jiu jitsu for self defense, I was skeptical whether it was something that I could do or should even attempt. When he searched gyms near me and said I could train with a champion female coach in right in Manlius, I decided I should at least give it a try. I had no idea what I was getting in to! I didn't know I was going to fall in love with the people, the sport, and the challenge. I'm not sure I would have if I didn't start at Vien Jiu Jitsu. The atmosphere is so respectful and safe, without being rigid and intimidating. Everyone is welcome to come learn and train and there are all kinds of people on the mats every day. Gee Vien and April Parks are genuinely amazing people teaching their passion for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and growing something really authentic and awesome. I'm seriously always in awe that I have the honor to learn from them and train at their gym, and thankful for the influence that
A Rare Jiu-Jitsu School That Takes Takedowns Seriously - As It Should One of the biggest issues in modern jiu-jitsu is how many schools neglect takedowns. (Although it’s not always because they don’t want to sometimes the classes are simply too overcrowded to safely start everyone from their feet.) Which is understandable. But it does mean that some students progress through the ranks with limited exposure to takedowns. The sport-focused culture of guard pulling is so dominant that even some blue belts can’t reliably secure a takedown against an untrained, strong athletic person which is a major problem if you care about self-defense as pulling guard could be extremely risky in a real situation At many modern jiu jitsu schools, sometimes you don’t start seeing solid takedown ability until purple belt and above. While those upper belts can usually get the job done, it really shouldn’t take that long to develop such a basic and essential
I've trained at many different gyms, across the country. Vien Jiujitsu is such an incredible community of people, from all walks of life, coming together to improve themselves. In this room, you will find a room full of hard workers. You will find some absolute mat savages looking to add another medal to their trophy case in an upcoming competition. You'll find people new to the sport looking to get in shape and have fun. And everything in between. My favorite thing about this gym is that whether you're a serious competitor, or a new hobbyist, everyone here has been kind, respectful, encouraging, accommodating to the needs of their partners, and invested in each other as teammates and friends. This is a safe place to train for anyone, of any background. An incredible place to learn. And run by coaches who give of themselves every day for their students. I could go on and on forever. Just come try it.
Vien Jiu Jiu is a great facility for both casual everyday people looking to learn Jiu Jitsu and to the professional grapplers looking to win world titles. All coaches at Vien Jiu Jitsu are top notch coaches that are excellent teachers for all level athletes. Both April and Gee are very knowledgeable and extremely highly accomplished coaches. I recommend if you are in the Syracuse area to go and train at Vien Jiu Jitsu.
