I dropped in at Virtus BJJ Checkmat Pensacola while in town for work this week, and I was thoroughly impressed. As a traveling purple belt, I’ve visited a fair number of gyms around the country, and this one easily ranks among the best. From the minute I walked in, I was greeted warmly by the front desk and introduced to the head instructor, Professor Jackson. The gym has a clean, professional feel without being overly formal—everyone trained hard, but the vibe was friendly and ego-free. I joined the evening class with the gi, which started with a well-paced warm-up and then moved into some slick closed guard bump sweep concepts that built progressively. Professor Jackson emphasized some key details that I had never seen before, which I appreciated. The rolls afterward were fantastic. Everyone was technical and respectful, which is exactly what I’m looking for as a visitor. Facilities were clean with plenty of mat space. Overall, if you
Virtus Jiu-Jitsu offers a welcoming atmosphere, knowledgeable coaches, and a clean, well-run facility. Classes are structured to support all levels, from beginners to advanced students. The team is professional, and the overall environment is focused, respectful, and positive. A great option for anyone looking to train jiu-jitsu in the Pensacola area.
Virtus is a great academy to train! You are not only treated like family, but you have the option in who you want to train with. If you are feeling froggy and want to train with a higher belt, you are welcome to do so. If you want to train with someone bigger, that’s fine too! If you don’t feel comfortable training with specific people, you don’t have to. It’s totally up to you in how you want to train. There is never any judgement and everyone is looking to help each other out! Professor Jackson is very knowledgeable and will work with each student until they understand the drills.
A family friend introduced me to Professor Jackson over a year ago and I have been training with him ever since. We have traveled the country together as I compete and he has always been by my side giving EXTREMELY high level coaching. Couldn’t recommend a gym more if you want to train jiu jitsu. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner who wants to better themselves or a well established competitor, Virtus is the place to be!!!
Very welcoming gym, I loved training here! Everyone is kind and it's clear they're really trying to foster a good community. Whenever I've brought up a concern, they're receptive and have always addressed it promptly. What I love is that they go out of their way to talk in person and make sure everything is resolved. BJJ is an amazing sport that I would recommend to everyone, and training at Virtus is a great way to improve both in and out of the mats.
