This is a review of the kids Bully Proof program. I have a six-year-old son who is well-behaved and good-natured. While his kindness is a wonderful quality, I sometimes worry it might make him a target for bullying in the future. 😅 Because of this, I’ve been searching for a martial arts program that: 1. Teaches practical self-defense skills. 2. Promotes physical self-control and discipline. 3. Encourages learning through observation and practice. I took martial arts as a child, and my instructor ran a very disciplined and structured program. That experience taught me self-control and respect, and I wanted my son to experience the same kind of environment. Living in the 5 Cities area, I explored all the local kids’ BJJ programs and even had my son attend one for several months. While all the programs kept the kids engaged with games and small competitions, the approach at the Gracie school stands out far above the rest. Many of the other

If you are looking for a dojo that is family and community oriented, clean and professional, and a safe place for you and/or child to learn disciple and self defense, I highly recommend Gracie Jiu Jitsu Nipomo. There is zero ego in this dojo, which makes it an incredibly safe place to learn. Everyone, including the staff and leadership are encouraging and patient. It’s the perfect place for new students! If you have wanted to try jiu jitsu, but have been too nervous, Gracie Jiu Jitsu in Nipomo is the perfect place to start! Every move is slowly and carefully walked through by each instructor. Gracie Jiu Jitsu also offers online tutorials of each technique you will be learning, so you can practice the scheduled techniques at home before class. I have never meet a more highly trained team of professionals. I’m enrolled in the Women’s Empowered courses and Combative's classes. I get to train with so many different belt levels and each instructor brings their own individual skill level and personality. Which is bonus to my training. I get all the best out of each of them. I admire, respect and trust them all as well. They truly represent the best of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu with even more classes to offer. In every class you will learn life changing and life saving skills. I love training here and I’m enjoying my Jiu-Jitsu journey at Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in Nipomo.
I've attended multiple other Jiu-Jitsu gyms in the area and Jeff's academy stands head and shoulders above the rest. As a physical therapy business owner, I am highly injury conscious, and the systematized, non-ego based, non-macho way that Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is operated makes this a super-safe and fun way to experience martial arts. Also, this Gracie form of Jiu-Jitsu is regarded universally as the MOST effective form of self defense around. So it's a perfect balance of safety AND effectiveness. I highly recommend Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in Nipomo for kids, teens and adults alike, and this place is perfect for women's self defense too, BTW. Jeff's wife, Laura, is involved too... it's a real family business where we can develop self-defense, martial arts acumen and camaraderie.
I had the opportunity to train with Jeff Martinez (owner of Gracie Jiu Jitsu Nipomo) for a number of years and I can't recommend him enough. Jeff makes you feel welcome, is highly knowledgable and trained, has a deep understanding of Jiu Jitsu, and consistently provided a safe and effective learning environment. I always appreciated Jeff's focus on practical self defense techniques over competition BJJ. His instructions were focused and he breaks things down into digestible chunks. Most importantly, Jeff is super positive and has a growth mindset for all of his students! I highly recommend training at his gym!
I have been attending jiu jitsu here at Gracie Nipomo for about 3 years. I started in the Women Empowered program and since earning my pink belt, went through the Women Empowered instructor program. I have loved my journey here. The confidence I have gained in doing jiu jitsu is incredible. Gracie Jiu Jitsu Nipomo has a wonderful environment where you will feel supported and welcomed! Sometimes gyms can feel very competitive but this place is so encouraging and focused on supporting all jiu jitsu practitioners in their learning! I love it here! If you’re on the fence, come join us! You’ll love it!
