I am the dad of an 8-year-old boy and 6-year-old girl. I’ve trained at a few different places in my life, and have been witness to many different martial arts programs for kids. The best that I know of is GB Santa Barbara. I write this as we say goodbye, because we are moving out of town. My son has been training here for 3 years, and my daughter for 1 year. Of all the sports and activities we had our kids enrolled in here in town, none stand up to the kid’s jiu jitsu program at GB Santa Barbara. Rodrigo is the man - great person, friendly, and the best at what he does. Recently, the kid’s program has been taught by Paulo Thiago (ex-UFC legend) and Coach Chaye. Paulo is such an incredible person. He teaches every technique like he would to an adult, but he makes it relatable to the kids. He has amazing patience, but lays down the law in very parent-friendly ways. Coach Chaye - I can’t say enough about him. He’s one of the most genuine,
GBSB is one of my favorite places to be. You'll find me there almost every night and sometimes twice a day getting my training in. I love the environment. Everyone is very polite and friendly. The instructors and professors are always there to help me improve my BJJ game and encourage me to do better. The students are all there to learn and help learn, not to beat you up like I've experienced at other gyms. And as for the kids program, sometimes there will be like 20-30 kids in a class and they'll all be so engaged in what the instructor/ professor is teaching. They've got a great program going on. And a great pink team thats on the rise! ~Alicia
Gracie Barra Santa Barbara has been absolutely wonderful for my child. The instructors are not only highly skilled and knowledgeable, but also extremely kind, patient, and encouraging with kids. They create a safe, welcoming environment where every student feels supported, respected, and motivated to improve. My child has grown in confidence and skill, and truly looks forward to every class. We appreciate how the coaches take time with each student and foster a real sense of community and family. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a positive martial arts experience for children. Thank You GB ✨
I have been training with Professor Rodrigo for over 4 years. This is a great school because everyone is very friendly and supportive. People of all ages train, some who just want to get in good shape but also guys looking to train for tournaments. Each class consists of a warm up, a stand up technique and then a few ground moves. Each week is dedicated to a certain position, and we go through new moves and details each day. In the advanced class we get at least thirty minutes of spar time. Overall, great place to train, no big egos and plenty of fun!
I've been training at Gracie Barra Santa Barbara for more than five years, and it has truly been a transformative experience. The physical and mental benefits are incredible—I've never felt stronger or more focused. But what sets this place apart is the community. The friendships I've formed here are like family. The coaches are exceptional, always pushing us to be our best while fostering a supportive and welcoming environment. If you're looking for a place that offers top-notch training and a sense of belonging, Gracie Barra Santa Barbara is it.
My favorite gym/martial arts school. Excellent instructors for Brazilian jiu jitsu, Muay Thai, and MMA. I was looking for a place to train, and teach my daughters self defense. I grew up athletic with a good exposure to Martial Arts. I was worried my kids would not get the same benefits in Santa Barbara. I was excited to meet the owner, and brought my family in for a free lesson soon thereafter. Very nice and professional staff. I am lucky to find such great instructors. Santa Barbara is a better place, and State Street is safer as well.
