We absolutely love Ground Rules Academy! Our boys, 12 and 9, have been thriving in this incredibly positive and supportive environment. It’s easygoing and welcoming, yet still focused on discipline and growth. They’re not just learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu—they’re learning a deeply respectable art while building confidence, respect, and resilience. Sensei Russ is a phenomenal coach—skilled, encouraging, and fantastic with kids. He creates the perfect balance of structure and fun, and truly brings out the best in his students. We’re so glad to be part of this community and highly recommend it to any family looking for a meaningful martial arts experience for their kids.
I've been training on and off at Ground Rules Academy since last year, and it's been an awesome experience every time I come back. The instructor stands out for his clear, detailed instruction and incredibly hands-on teaching style. As a college professor and MIT graduate, he brings a level of clarity and structure to the class that makes it easier to understand and apply proper technique. The gym itself has a friendly, welcoming vibe and is always kept clean. Whether you're just starting out or looking to sharpen your skills, this is a great place to train.
I recently started attending GRA, and I can’t recommend it enough! The instructor is incredibly knowledgeable, with tons of experience in Jiu-Jitsu. His teaching style is clear, patient, and effective. The atmosphere is welcoming, and the gym itself is clean and well-maintained. I feel challenged and motivated every time I step on the mat. If you’re looking to improve your Jiu-Jitsu skills in a supportive, professional environment, this is the place to be!
I would like to thank Coach Russel for welcoming me into his school. Great instructor, I loved the layout and the students and curriculum. One thing that is unique about this school is the mat which sits on an elevated platform enables the students to perform high level take downs with no fear of injury. Most schools lack this and it was definitely a plus in my book looking at the different schools I have come across in my travels. If you are in the Pleasanton area and looking to train or if you're looking to start some self defense classes, you can't find better than Ground Rules Academy!
I’m brand new to jiu-jitsu and combat sports, and Ground Rules Academy has been nothing but welcoming and encouraging. Coach Russel is a fantastic coach who breaks down complex techniques into clear, actionable steps that make learning feel approachable. The students bring great energy, and the culture here is second to none — supportive, motivating, and ego-free. The mats and facility are spotless and well-maintained. 10/10 recommend, whether you’re brand new or have years of combat sports experience.
10/10 recommend Ground Rules if you’re brand new to the sport, intermediate, or advanced. Coach Russell and everyone training hold a very high level of respect balanced with training intensity that allows for a safe and extremely knowledge environment. I also want to mention the level of cleanliness is unmatched as there is a great deal of emphasis on gym and mat hygiene which I found amazing. Please visit Ground Rules Academy!
