Professor Ryan Young is the real deal, having trained under Professor Dave Kama, who received his black belt from the legendary Grandmaster Rickson Gracie. This is the real Gracie Jiu Jitsu taught by great instructors. I started training at another location a year ago and discovered the truth that Brazilian jiu jitsu is sport/competition focused and not the same jiu jitsu created, perfected and passed down by Helio Gracie and his family. Gracie Jiu jitsu is the traditional art focused on self-defense and what I wanted to learn from the get go. Once I discovered this, and having found Professor Young and Kama Jiu Jitsu here in Texas, I knew I needed to switch schools and couldn't be happier. There's no better place to train and study the gentle art of Gracie Jiu Jitsu in Texas.
I have been practicing at Kama Jiu-Jitsu since 2021, after being a part of various other sport-centered gyms. Kama Jiu-Jitsu has significantly enhanced my understanding of the discipline. The classes are taught in great detail, which I truly appreciate. Jiu-jitsu has also positively impacted my personal life. For instance, a few weeks ago after a morning class instructed by Greg, I felt physically tired but mentally focused and serene. While driving to work, I unexpectedly received a work call from an investigator for an unplanned interview. Despite being grilled for over an hour about a work situation, I remained calm and was able to provide clear, well-reasoned answers. I attribute my composure during the interview to my morning jiu-jitsu training. I am grateful to Kama Jiu-Jitsu for deepening my understanding of jiu-jitsu and for its positive impact on my personal life.
I was vacationing in the area for the holiday season. I reached out via instagram to inquire about dropping in. I got messaged to call, I spoke with professor Ryan. I was able to take care of my scheduling and payment online prior to getting to the class. Upon arrival I was greeted by Steve and filled out a waiver. Then I got to chit-chat with professor Ryan a bit before class. The class was 2 hours with a warm up, self defense, Jiu jitsu technique and positional sparring. Really great class, as they say “the devil is in the details”, professor Ryan had the “invisible Jiu jitsu” tips and concepts to help out the whole class. He was able to help me with my stack passing! As a traveling brown belt, it’s always nice to experience other academies. The practitioners at Kama Jiu-Jitsu were tough and technical, but also very welcoming and friendly. I hope to return. Thank you for the hospitality and rolls! 🤙🤙🤙
I’ve been training at Kama Jiu Jitsu for six years, and my son has been with them for about a year. We absolutely love it! The emphasis on self-defense, the structured curriculum, and the strong support for veterans and frontline workers truly set this place apart. They organize fantastic events that bring our community together, both on and off the mats. Every session feels like working out with an extended family. The instructors genuinely care about our progress and are excited to help us achieve our fitness and self-defense goals. In less than a year, I’ve seen a remarkable boost in my son’s confidence—he even refers to it as "ninja school," which brings a smile to my face! As a retired veteran, I appreciate the safe and welcoming environment. I’m proud to say that I’ve reached the purple belt level, and I truly feel like I’ve stumbled upon a hidden gem. My family and I couldn’t be happier with our experience at Kama Jiu Jitsu!
Kama Jiu-Jitsu is an awesome place to learn and train Jiu-jitsu. Great people and also a great facility. I was on a visit to Dallas for a couple of days and was excited about the possibility to train at Kama Jiu-Jitsu. Took a private with Prof Ryan Young and had 2 days to go to regular group classes. I learned a lot in both, the private and group classes. After 11 years of Jiu-Jitsu I can genuinely say, this is one of the best gyms I've ever been to and trained at!
I wasn’t able to officially sign up due to personal reasons, but I had the chance to experience a class with Ryan and it was genuinely one of the best training sessions I’ve ever had. Even though it was just one class, I felt completely comfortable with the teaching style and the way the class was structured. Ryan created a welcoming and supportive environment that made it easy to learn and enjoy the experience, even as a newcomer. I walked away from that single class having learned a lot, and it left a lasting impression. Ryan has been nothing but kind, professional, and encouraging throughout the process. Once I’m able to sort out my situation, I absolutely plan to sign up. Highly recommend this place to anyone curious about Jiu-Jitsu or looking for a great community to train with.
