This is hands down the best martial arts training I’ve ever had. The all black belt instruction is unparalleled—Professor Shawn’s fundamentals class lays a solid foundation, and his competition classes are no joke. Professor Nakana’s advanced class pushes boundaries, and Cameron Brock’s no-gi sessions are top-tier. The atmosphere here is all about growth and camaraderie. Plus, Coach Nicholle’s Saturday morning ladies class, which my wife loves, fosters a supportive community for women in BJJ. The instructors' dedication to each student’s progress is evident in every session. If you’re even mildly interested in BJJ, whether gi or no-gi, give this place a try—you won’t be disappointed. They genuinely create champions, both on and off the mat.
This place and these people are some of the best in the industry. The training floor is world class. The instructors are world class. The environment is positive and full of energy. I can’t say enough good things about this gym! Growing up, I was never particularly athletic, so I never truly understood the value of great coaching or the feeling of being part of a team. Shawn has been a good and loyal friend since about 1998. I've watched him go from a white belt to a 4th degree Blackbelt and champion. He has an incredible pedigree with great technical abilities, he knows how to train champions. If your wanting to compete, or train for self defense purposes, Shawn Hammonds BJJ is the place to train. It is a family environment that fosters life long friendships. As an instructor, he is incredible, giving technical details that will make your experience 2nd to none. Many of his Blackbelts attend class on a daily bases and are there to help. This fosters a wonderful training environment and increases a student's learning potential. Lastly, don't ever think your too old to train and learn. I was in town for work and decided to check out Shawn Hammonds on a week pass. Wow, this gym is sick. First off Shawn greeted me at the door and had a conversation with me and he introduced me to all of the instructors. I appreciated that a lot. You won’t find many gyms more welcoming than this one. From the jump, everyone made me feel like part of the team. After my first class, all three instructors personally came up and asked me to roll. That kind of attention and hospitality is rare, especially as a visitor. The instruction was solid, the vibe was super friendly. They also have great facilities. The mats. Workout area etc. are all clean and kept in great shape. If you’re in the area, whether you’re just visiting or looking for a home gym, I highly recommend checking this place out. These guys are awesome.
I heard about Shawn in florida from a client and when I got to Nashville I heard his name again and walked into his academy and met him. I couldn’t see myself training anywhere else in Nashville! The level of respect and teaching Shawn and his team have is absolutely amazing. Pretty much every class I have been to there has been 3-5 black belts in class and helping coach which I’ve never seen. I can already see and feel my progress with Shawn Hammond’s Jiu jitsu. Thankful for him and the team here! Come try out a class if you’re in the fence. Such a great and safe atmosphere.
