I’ve been a martial artists for more than 35 years on and off. I’ve had the pleasure of training with world champions and I am here to tell you Checkmat Gallatin is absolutely top tier. One of the things I look for in a BJJ gym is a friendly welcoming vibe and people that are genuinely there to help each other grow and we’ve found just that a true community. As a father of an 11yr old I can honestly say Professor Sebastian ones one hell of a kids program. Excellent coaching, no nonsense classes where the kids are expected to Follow direction…but they also never leave without a smile on their faces and looking forward to the next class. As a family we love training together and this sport has been has been game changer for our family. It gives us all 3 something we can nerd out about together and connect on as a family. In today’s day and age family are all being pulled in different directions I cannot say enough about how powerful it ha
Wanted to have my 3.5 yr old son start Jiu-Jitsu. I found Checkmat was close to home and had great reviews. The owner Sebastian set him up on a 7 day trial to see if he was ready to start. We met with Sebastian the first day and he was very welcoming. Sebastian was very straightforward on what to expect and spoke directly to our son so he would as well. Sebastian made us feel very confident that he and his coaches would help ensure our son will get the best experience and evaluation, that day. Sebastian and his coaches did an amazing job using visual, tactile, and verbal instructions to cater to all learning styles for my son and all the other students. I can tell all the other students felt comfortable with Sebastian and the coaches based on how well they were able to comprehend the fact they had to go half speed with our son. Sebastian emphasized that he would not give us a false evaluation and if he felt our son was not ready. Then h
I was in town for a week and wanted to keep up with my Jiu Jitsu training. Back home I train at a gym I really value and hold to high standards—so I wasn’t sure if anywhere else would measure up. I’ve got to say, this place absolutely did. From the instruction to the atmosphere on the mats, everything felt just as solid as my home gym. The training was high-level, the people were welcoming, and I left every class feeling challenged in the best way. My favorite part was being able to hit a 6 AM class and then pair it with an evening class—it let me pack in a ton of training in a short amount of time. On top of that, the facility itself is awesome: they’ve got showers, a cold plunge, a sauna, and even a stretching/mobility table that makes recovery easy. Also, the mats are top quality and and don’t have any tape peeling back to annoy you as your being choked into submission (have seen this at numerous gyms) 🤘🙃 This gym genuinely feels lik
Update : After 3 years of training at Checkmat, I have never been happier with a gym. The instruction by Professor Sebastian is top notch as well as the structure of the training. Under Professor Sebastian's instruction I was able to win an IBJJF Masters 5 blue belt World Championship and promote to a Purple belt. If you are looking for a family atmosphere that promotes discipline and integrity, Checkmat BJJ Gallatin is the place for you. Checkmat BJJ Gallatin is an excellent place to train whether you are brand new to the sport, or an experienced practitioner. Professor Sebastian is extremely knowledgeable and runs a great practice that is physically challenging, but also focuses on technique. I have been training at this Checkmat Gallatin for over a year now and I can honestly say that it is the best decision I have ever made. The instructors are top-notch, and the community of students are incredibly supportive and friendly. Sebastian is knowledgeable, patient, and always willing to help improve your technique. He takes the time to explain the moves and ensures that everyone is understands the technique and able to execute it correctly. What sets this gym apart is the camaraderie and the sense of community among the students. Everyone is welcoming and encouraging, and there is no sense of ego or competition. You will never feel intimidated or judged, regardless of your level of experience. I have seen remarkable progress in my own skills and physical fitness since joining this gym. Checkmat Gallatin has become a second home to me. If you are looking for a supportive and challenging training environment, look no further than
I signed myself and my kids up about 6 months ago, and we have been loving it as a family. I can see more confidence in my kids, and it was great for me to switch up my workout routine with a skill. I did jiu jitsu for years when I was younger, so I do have some frame of reference to say what makes a school good or bad. This school definately strikes a good balance between challenging you, without killing you either. So whether your brand new, or have some other martial arts training, it is worth coming down and checking out what they have to offer. They have multiple times throughout the day, nearly every day, making it easy to fit into my schedule. Whether your goal is to train for competitions, or just general health and fitness with a self-defense application, you can find what your looking for here.
