UPDATE: Since I made my first review 3 years ago, my son also started training and I did as well. It is a fantastic gym and I feel so blessed to be part of the amazing community here. It really is an extended family and everyone is welcome here. The Professors and coaches are top tier and I’ve gained so much on and off the mats through my practice of jiu jitsu. My daughter, 7, has been practicing jiu jitsu at Gracie Barra Franklin for almost 4 years and my son, 4, just started. I’ve been so impressed with the patience and instruction the Professors and Coaches give to all levels of the kids classes. They take the time to really demonstrate each technique so every child can understand, and beyond that, they really build a sense of teamwork and responsibility for the kids as they gain stripes and get to help with the newer members. My oldest son (3) started taking classes here at beginning of the year (2022) and loves it. can’t wait for my youngest to join next year. the professors teach him proper defense and discipline, they take time to explain technique and movement. in addition, they also teach body awareness and control (which is key, developmentally). If on the fence, i’d encourage you to try it out for sure! highly recommend, for kids and adults! UPDATE!! 12/20/2025 since my last post- my whole family has joined jiujitsu (including myself!). we have been training 4 years now and LOVE IT! on top of all the positives I could write regarding doing juijitsu, the best would be the friendships you make with everyone else on the mats. surround yourself with people who continue to make themselves better, makes you better!
My 10-year-old son Joca has been training at Gracie Barra Cool Springs for 2.5 years, hitting the mats every Tuesday and Thursday, and it’s the highlight of his week. The coaches always roll out fresh techniques—whether it’s a sneaky De La Riva sweep or a slick back-take from turtle—so Joca never repeats the same class twice. He comes home fired up, practicing moves on the living room rug (sorry, couch).The best part? Sometimes the session ends with 10–15 minutes of pure kid chaos: “entertainment games” like shark tank. It’s structured fun that keeps them begging to stay late. Physically, he’s stronger, faster, and tougher to pin (even the dog gave up wrestling him). Mentally? Night-and-day confidence. Last month he calmly shut down a playground bully with words and stance alone—no hands needed. The professors drill respect, focus, and grit alongside the jiu-jitsu, and it sticks.
UPDATE: Our son has continued to train at Gracie Barra Franklin for almost three years now. It’s one of the best decisions we have made. We continue to watch his Jiu Jitsu improve, leadership skills develop, and confidence grow. Professor Chris and Professor Justin along with Coach Shupe and others continue to challenge and encourage our son. We love our GB Franklin community! Our son has been going to Gracie Barra Franklin for a little over 3 months. He LOVES it! Not only is he learning Jiu Jitsu, he is gaining self confidence and loves working towards the next goal. Great place!!
If you want to change your child’s life for the better enroll them at Gracie Barra Franklin. The two brothers who are professors are amazing strong leaders and their entire staff especially Shupe is a class act they inspire the class of kids and will make them better physically and mentally. Jiu-Jitsu is more than a sport it’s a life commitment. Happy we have started the journey here plus they have kids night out fun team building for kids. This school and group is unique and wonderful group of people that have formed fantastic chemistry ❤️
In the year my son has been training here, he has gone from knowing absolutely nothing about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) or martial arts to winning his first competition. This incredible progress would not have been possible without the exceptional training and clear communication provided by Professors Chris and Justin at every level. This has also led to me joining and learning as well. I highly recommend this gym and these amazing professors and coaches!
