This is a fantastic place to train. The facility is clean and comfortable, with plenty of room on the mats. The community is friendly and welcoming, with a good mix of skill levels. Coach Tim is an excellent instructor, who teaches in a way that is comprehensible and meaningful. His feedback is always specific to the student - I get tips that are immediately useful every time I train with Coach Tim. Above all, it's a fun place to be. Come join the fun!
Had an awesome launch week. Already a strong community of great people, with plenty of upper belts and day 1’s like myself. Coach Tim really connects with his students, beyond simply ‘ok here’s our lesson for the day, see ya’ - some days are based around a concept one individual needs work on, but the whole class will benefit from. I need more passes, so Tim taught a new pass that led into lots of possibilities, namely a submission everyone could add to their toolbox. Expect a personal, motivated training experience surrounded by courteous, likeminded people. The Black Dog will give you what you give it- if you show up with a positive attitude and put in the work, Tim and his team will put that same effort into your growth. You’ll see that right away. Black Dog is the best place to train if you want quality training with amazing people. It is a beautiful and clean space. Tim is a phenomenal coach who will push you, yet makes you feel encouraged when you improve. He explains techniques in a way that are easy to understand. I have learned more with him in a couple months than I did in a much longer period at other gyms. You will definitely feel welcomed by everyone. It is not a place you will feel intimidated for being new. There is a great 101 program for the beginner, as well as a lot of higher belts for the more advanced to grow with. I love this gym and hope to have the privilege to attend for many years.
As someone with years of training and teaching experience, I was looking for a gym that offered both high-level instruction and a solid community, and Black Dog delivers on both. The coaching is technical and thoughtful, the vibe is humble and focused, and the training partners are tough but supportive. I’ve felt challenged, respected, and re-energized in my practice since training here. Highly recommend to anyone serious about jiu-jitsu.
Great to finally have beautiful place to train jiu jitsu in Lake Oswego. I met Tim about a decade ago; we have had fun times sharing the mats together. The gym is super clean with a rad, unique vibe. The Sonos sound system is dope. Super welcoming environment. Awesome open mat for anyone to come train and make some new friends.
Beautiful school. Nice mats with bouncy floor to reduce injury. Instructor is respectful, very knowledgeable. The guy is basically a hand grenade- so tough, but super controlled. He won’t accidentally injure you. Race, gender, sexual orientation- everybody is respected and welcomed. Lots of black and brown belts from other schools come through with different ideas. Very cool open learning environment. I’m old and instructor has tailored workouts to avoid getting hurt. Lots of hands on instruction. Also rite next to a Whole Foods so you can get a healthy snack after burning 1000 cal/ hr. Lots of laughter, so u don’t really feel like you’re working out as hard as you are. Roll through!
