Even though my kids are not doing Jiujitsu currently due to scheduling conflicts, they spent months of amazing time here! Kids are friendly and supportive, seeing them making progress together is truly a joy for us parents. I can’t say enough positive things about the coaches. Michelle is kind and sweet, and will make the membership process a breeze. Head coach Chris is knowledgeable, patient, and positive, and the best part is he explains techniques simple and well that children understand and absorb. He not only teaches the Jiujitsu techniques, at the end of every class, he always takes time to acknowledge parents’ effort for making the class possible and make sure kiddos understand and appreciate it too. So if you are interested in learning Jiujitsu for yourself or your children, go check it out, they offer classes for both little and big people!
Training under Professor Chris Standing at BTT Portland has been an incredible experience. From day one, it was clear that he genuinely cares about his students and their progress. His coaching style is detailed, patient, and motivating, whether you’re a beginner just learning the basics or an experienced competitor fine-tuning your game. Professor Chris coached me back over a decade ago while I was competing and still coaches me. I can honestly say that Chris played a huge role in preparing me to win my fights. His guidance, support, and technical coaching gave me the confidence to perform at my best. BTT Portland is more than just a gym—it’s a real community. It's an awesome place for kids to get started, and the entire team makes sure everyone feels welcome. Chris and the other instructors are dedicated to making sure each student improves, no matter their skill level. If you’re looking for high-level BJJ training with coaches who tr
I trained at another gym for about a year before switching to BTT Portland NE, and honestly, I just wish I had started here from the beginning. The difference in coaching, community, and overall vibe was immediate and exactly what I was looking for. Professor Chris Standing and his wife Michelle are not only phenomenal coaches, they’re incredible people who have built something truly special here. Their passion for the sport and for helping students grow shows every day—on and off the mats. They break things down clearly, challenge you to improve, and foster a team culture that’s both welcoming and motivating. Since joining, my jiu jitsu has improved faster and more consistently than ever before. The training partners are tough but supportive, and the environment pushes you to show up, learn, and keep getting better. If you’re serious about jiu jitsu—or even just curious—BTT Portland NE is the place to be. Can’t recommend it enough.
What a great place to train! Chris, Michelle and the rest of the coaching staff are amazing! Their kids program is top notch! It provides effective, age appropriate training for all skill levels! There are kids stepping on the mats for the first time to kids that are in national competition mode! The adult program is set up to work with all skill levels as well! If you’re just starting the journey with your kids or looking for yourself, you won’t be disappointed with the level of support found here! We love BTT Portland! I also recommend to check out their IG to see videos, what we have been up to and what it is like to be part of such a welcoming community!
Chris Standing is one of our family’s favorite bjj coaches. Our kids love training at BTT Portland so much that we commute from Oregon City 4-5 times a week in rush hour traffic. Professor Chris is extremely knowledgeable, and has an incredible talent for explaining and demonstrating moves to his students. He has the biggest heart, and is amazing at working with all people, especially children. We love the time and care that he and Coach Michelle put into each student to make sure that they understand what is being taught. You can tell that they really care about their gym, and love their community! If you want a quality jiu jitsu education, check out BTT Portland!
Chris and Michelle run a great gym. I came in for Sunday open mat, as a no-stripe white belt training at another school in town. Both they and their students were so welcoming and friendly. I had three rolls (one no-gi blue belt, one gi white belt, and one gi brown belt). All were happy to roll and were super respectful with regard to safety and desired pacing/intensity. I hope I achieved the same. I chatted for a while afterward with my blue-belt partner about feedback, positions and ideas, and upcoming competitions. Michelle gave me a tour of the facility before I left and described their plans for a big expansion in July. I'm excited to come back for more open mats and the occasional class, and to see the expanded mat space and striking area!
