Alive is a community centered gym. We were invited by friends to attend the jiu jitzu kids class. I was surprised that the kids class is all ages from 5-14. I have 4 children within those ages so I was able to put all of my kids in the same class. This is the first time ever that that has happened for us. I am also really impressed with how Coach Bill managed the children. Yes, they train for jiu jitzu but some kids would rather make use of the yoga ball, yoga swing, foam roller or gymnastic mat set towards the back of the class, which is an option for 30 burpees 😅 My favorite part of class is the last 5 minutes when Coach gathers the children in an attentive circle to discuss something about class. They might give props to other students or they might discuss how to tell if someone is struggling. As of that isn’t enough, nestled in the middle of the kids class is an adult CrossFit class in another room of the gym. Sometimes my kids wil
Great gym. I've been personally transformed into a Dutch Muay Thai killing machine after having trained with resident Muay Thai coach Nik for 3 years. I've heard more than once that he's the best Dutch Muay Thai coach in Portland, and from my experience I'd have to agree. Lots of folks swear by his conditioning class, which is focused on cardio- and skill-based fitness. I personally bounce between boxing and muay thai classes to give myself a more well-rounded skillset. The schedule at Alive is the best in Portland; nobody offers as many classes for as cheap a membership. You got Muay Thai, boxing, Jiu Jitsu, Kali... and that's not even mentioning Crossfit. There's a kid's program too. There is even a donation-based Community Self-Defense class, if you're poor and looking for a place to learn a little about protecting yourself. If you're looking to get into MMA for exercise, or an aspiring MMA fighter looking for a good place to build u
I started my daughter in the children’s jiujitsu class when she was 6 and now at 8 I’m am so thankful for her learning and development that has come directly from the experience of being taught and mentored by Coach Bill. Not only does she learn an amazing self defense skill but also how to maintain her composure patience and perseverance. I cannot recommend having you child in these classes enough! They are 5 days a week from 4-6 in which you can choose how much are how little they go. This is hands down the best investment in my child’s growth as a young lady. I began my own jiujitsu journey 2 years ago and love learning from Coach Eli and Coach Bill. It is the hardest workout both mentally and physically. Imagine practicing mindfulness while you and your partner are trying to submit each other, what’s not to love. Again I cannot recommend this enough, not only for your child’s personal development but as well as your own.
I’ve recently joined Alive MMA and WOW what a wonderful experience! If you’re looking for a gym that has everything you need to train either as a professional and dedicated martial athlete, or just as a regular joe like me who wants to train efficiently, effectively, hard, and in a manner that will extend ones lifespan and health span: this is the place. There is also a wealth of expertise and knowledge in this gym including 3 Jiu Jitsu blackbelts who train here and multiple fighters who have come from here to go on to the UFC. The environment here is supper supportive and the owner Bill has a heart of gold and maximizes the potential of this business by using it to support the community in a multiplicity of ways. This includes children’s programs, “Parkinson’s boxing” a class designed to help those suffering from that disease to arrest its progression and community self defense classes. I love this place and I really encourage you to g
This is hands down one of the best gyms in Portland, I have trained around town at multiple academies and I think Alive has the best community and vibe. Every coach in every discipline is an expert and you can chose between world class Jiu Jitsu, Thai Boxing, American Boxing and Cross Fit. I literally can never get board training her. They have something for everyone the hardcore competitors to the weekend warriors and everything in between. I have never felt judged or pressured into doing anything I didn’t feel comfortable doing and have continued to show up and get better every class. 10/10 would recommend
I've spent a couple years at this gym. It is exceptional for both adults and children, both beginner and advanced. Nick in Muay Tai is an awesome, patient instructor. Steph and Hilary are awesome, patient crossfit instructors. I haven't spent too much time in Jiu Jitsu, but Bill the owner is clearly an exceptional teacher as well. I don't believe you could possibly find, or even imagine up a better gym with these services in the Portland area. The reason I took a star off is that the school has overcharged me a month's dues on maybe half a dozen occasions. In all cases the problem was promptly corrected when I brought it to the gym's attention. However after assurances it would not happen again, it always has. It's tiresome, but I've also found billing to be a common issue at local gyms in, at least SE Portland. Sometimes the admin is an obstacle to get to the services. Over time I have simply relegated a checking account just for this
