Years ago, I promised myself that I would write a review for this dojo only after earning my blue belt. I wanted to ensure I had ample time to understand the techniques, test their effectiveness, and gain a thorough understanding of the curriculum and its rationale. This way, I could also form an accurate view of the coaches, the people, and the overall environment at Gracie Jiu-Jitsu NY.

If you read nothing else in this review and simply want confirmation that joining is the right decision, I can assure you it is. This place is a gem. You will learn self-defense in a safe environment and work with great people who know what they are talking about.

The dojo was founded by Sensei Mike, who has been training for over 30 years. He received his black belt from Relson Gracie and occasionally trains with Rickson Gracie. When you step into the dojo, you are greeted with a wealth of knowledge that is rare to find. You will be work
I’ve been in martial arts since I was 10 yrs old I owned a karate school for 28 yrs before I closed it so I know who is a real teacher and one who is in it for Just money. I trained with Michael Casey and known him for a long time. Michael is VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE AND HAS A GIFT OF BEING ABLE TO BREAKDOWN EVERYTHING HE TEACHES SO YOU GET IT. The Gracie system he teaches is tested and proven in the name it holds Gracie BJJ it doesn’t get better then that trust me. If you live in the Bronx or even 20 miles away it is well worth the time to train with Professor Michael Casey . I know first hand he is like a family member to the Gracie family. His class is friendly and holds no judgement of anyone from your first class he and his students want you to succeed they want you to love what they teach. When you leave his class you will be addicted trust me. So if your looking for BJJ in the north Bronx Gracie BJJ WITH PROFESSOR MICHAEL CASEY ID THE
I trained and taught karate for many years and always wanted to get into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Having no other point of reference I gave Michael Casey's school a try and soon found out there is no more legitimate Gracie School anywhere, much less in NYC. Michael maintains the philosophy (self-defense first, sport second) of the Gracie family that inspired a nation of martial artists in the early days of the UFC. He has, and shares with his students, direct access to Grand Master Relson Gracie and his brothers but just as importantly, he's cultivated the best group of assistant instructors and training partners I've experienced at any BJJ school (and I've now had the opportunity to visit quite a few). Whether you're looking for a long term adventure into a lifetime of Jiu Jitsu or just want to 'get in shape' with something more interesting than the drudgery of 'going to the gym' three days a week, I can't recommend Michael's school enough
This is the place to train if you live in NY. I currently live out of state but train there every opportunity I get when I come back to NY. Each visit, I am welcomed with open arms and feel like I am a part of the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu NY Family.
I have also had the opportunity to attend Mike’s seminar in MD.

Mike is a professional, with a passion to share his knowledge of jui-jitsu. His ability to breakdown fundamentals and to teach concepts of the art makes it easier for beginners to grasp and challenges those with experience. I highly recommend Gracie Jiu-Jitsu NY! You won’t be disappointed with you investment.
When I started to study Gracie jiu jitsu it was in the mid-1990s. Back then if you were really interested in learning this incredible new martial art you had to travel long and far. Once you found a “school” it was more likely to be an association where classes were taught by high-level white belts and blue belts, believe it or not. Today there is a school on every block. The truth of the matter, however, is that teaching is an art form in and of itself. I have known many proficient jiu jitsu players who could not transmit the knowledge. Professor Mike Casey is in a class all his own. His thoughtful approach and codification is second to none. More importantly, is the fact that the environment is conducive to learning through proper training and compassionate guidance. I highly recommend this Academy.
First and foremost I’d like to say Mike Casey is absolutely amazing I am blessed to have the luxury of being affiliated with Watershed BJJ were I currently attend as a student in Fredericksburg, Va under Shawn Maines who is an absolute pleasure to call my coach, Mentor, & friend! Mike Casey had recently came to the Fredericksburg area and I was fortunate enough to attend a seminar and I’m am so grateful for the amazing knowledge that Mike was kind enough to share with everyone at the seminar! With the help of two absolutely amazing inspirational individuals in Mike a Shawn after 5 months of training BJJ I had recently decided to go out of my comfort zone an compete in competition in back to back weeks . I managed to get 2nd place in 130 pound No-GI & the following week I had to be bumped up to 154 pound division weighing roughly 120 pounds in the GI with all odds against me I managed to secure the submission with 9 seconds on the clock
