I have recently begun classes with Mr. Benjamin Halcewicz at Krav Maga Carlsbad IKM. I was looking for a program that would address my needs in martial arts training. I am 50+ and have been out of a regular workout routine for over 15 years. Although I do have a few physical challenges, I am able to integrate into the class and get a great workout while learning the devastatingly effective style of Krav Maga. Mr. Halcewicz is clearly one of the best instructors I have worked with in over 20 years of cumulative martial arts training. He's very knowledgeable and focuses on correct technique and effectiveness, as well as numerous drills to practice in realistic scenarios. He also has a great deal of patience and highly emphasizes safety. I highly recommend Krav Maga Carlsbad IKM as a training venue for fun, affordable, (yet very effective) martial arts training.
If you are looking to do Krav Maga in the San Diego area Benjamin is the only person to learn from. I checked around all of the Krav Maga schools in the area and I briefly tried Krav Maga with one the most popular instructors in San Diego. I was horrified to see that him and his instructors couldn't fight their way out of a wet paper bag, regardless of their claims to the contrary. As a Judo and Karate black belt with experience in wrestling, BJJ and boxing I know an impostor when I see one. You can't learn how to defend yourself from somebody that doesn't know how to fight! However, this is not the case with Benjamin. His practical fighting skills from his background in Karate, boxing, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu make him the perfect Krav Maga instructor. His classes are well organized, expertly delivered and the skills he teaches actually work. Don't go anywhere else!
The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is right now. I was worried I was tool old to start a martial art. Then, I have found IKM Carlsbad and Benjamin 3 years ago and have been training there for 3 years now. The instructor is very encouraging and patient while being focused on proper technique. The classes are getting bigger every month and there's a very big range of students. That's really great news because complete beginners don't feel out of their comfort zone and they will find more advance students to train with and improve while advanced students will also find other advanced students to work with. Techniques when taught are broken down in small steps and repeated a few times. Then the whole technique is done as a whole. At the end of the class there's almost always some conditioning as well.
I had studied Krav Maga at another studio in North San Diego County for many years. It was run more like a workout session, there was no testing and no accountability for precise technique. I got bored and became a couch potato for five years. Then I heard rumor of this amazing instructor who had extensively studied and teaches actual Israeli based IKM Krav Maga. In fact, some of his training is directly from Gabi Noah, one of the proteges of the founder of Krav Maga, Imi Lichtenfeld. I finally found him and jumped back into training. He's running Krav Maga Carlsbad out of a karate studio in the southern end of coastal Carlsbad (right off the 5 and Palomar Airport Road). The current students represent a very broad range of skill sets. There are true beginners (male and female) that are fun to help and watch them go from the very first day and unsure of themselves to actually having some self defense skills. Then there are those who are
The first step inside the dojo, a person will notice is the cleanliness, and a warm welcome from Ben. The instructors are always welcoming, prepared and professional. Their experience and dedication is visibly and verbally shown. Each class wether it’s Karate, Krav, or BJJ is taught in a way that is clear, concise, easy to follow and understand. The type of instruction is not only geared for real world self defense, but also strengthening the body and mind for life's many challenges. If you are looking for a quality place to train, Global Martial Arts is the place to be.
Stop searching: THIS is where you want to train. After trying different martial arts and self-defense gyms in the area, I can say without a doubt that Global Martial Arts is the best there is for new and experienced practitioners alike. You won't find better instructors or a better community anywhere. I came in with no experience and in a matter of weeks, Benjamin, Olivier, and Thiago have taught me how to fight standing up, lying down, and everything in between. Some people are masters of their craft, others are master teachers; at Global Martial Arts you get both. Best decision I made since moving to SD is coming here. Just wish I'd done it sooner - and you will, too, so hurry up and go!
