This is my love letter to 10p VTA. I spent six weeks in Ventura and trained at 10th Planet as much as possible, oftentimes twice a day. Coming from a Gi dominate background, I was expecting mass confusion, repeated inversions, lots of people attacking my legs, and that's exactly what I got. Scott, Matt, Greg, they all changed the way I look at the game. Scott always took the time to answer my inane questions about Jiu Jitsu, directing me to the meta of the movements, the overarching principals of not just 10th Planet, but the entirety of the principals of this sport. Matt's explanations of leg/foot dexterity, flowing with your opponent's movements, and being patient are outstanding. Greg, Nick, the Twins, every instructor was/is excellent in my opinion, I enjoyed every class and filled page after page with debriefing notes. All of the training partners I had were respectful, humorous, and looking to learn. No white belt death matches, n
I don't normally write reviews positive, or negative, but here is my opinion on why 10th Planet Ventura is a great choice. First, I checked multiple ju-jitsu spots in Ventura when I moved here - really wanting to get started. Most of them did seem solid - nice coaches, clean, nice students etc, but 10P stood out. I signed up I think the day after my trial class haha! Why? Well some of the reasons included the laid back nature of the coaches who are both very open minded about martial arts. The head coaches are also cool/funny/interesting with different coaching styles/personalities which is great. Also, all of the students aka the vibe of the gym is what you want to be around after work, or whatever. Many are into bjj/mma, but others are just getting started. No cringeworthy macho nonsense - this gym is serious about ju-jitsu, and serious about enjoying yourself.
Ventura 10th planet Jiu-Jitsu moment I stepped onto the mats, I was greeted with warmth and professionalism. The instructors are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about what they do, making each class not only informative but also incredibly fun. The atmosphere is welcoming and inclusive, fostering a sense of community among students of all levels. Whether you're a beginner or an advanced practitioner, 10th planet ventura offers a supportive environment to help you reach your goals. I highly recommend this school to anyone looking to learn martial arts in a positive and empowering setting.
Dropped into a class at 10th Planet Ventura while visiting the area for work, and after 10 years of training, I can honestly say this is one of the best gyms I’ve ever stepped into. Scott Ross and Matt Dempsey are hands-down some of the best coaches I’ve met—super attentive, detail-oriented, and they create an incredibly welcoming atmosphere that works perfectly whether you’re brand new to jiu-jitsu or a high-level athlete. The energy and instruction were top-notch, making every roll fun and productive. I’m so stoked I found this place—highly recommend 10th Planet Ventura to anyone in the area!
I am so glad I decided to check this place out. I was a wrestler in high school and I was looking for a way to continue grappling after I graduated. Not only are the instructors welcoming and incredibly insightful, everyone that I have met here is friendly and willing to help. Overall, it's a great environment to learn new skills while also getting a great workout in. If you're looking to try out jiu-jitsu for the first time, meet a bunch of cool people, or even just get in shape and become more flexible, I would definitely give this place a visit.
I trained here while I was stationed in Port Hueneme with the US Navy. I absolutely loved the gym, the coaches and the people here. They even offered a military discount which helped out a lot. They were also super understanding with deployment rotations, and paused my membership anytime I had to leave. Scott and Matt are the coolest black belts you’ll ever meet, can’t recommend this gym enough! My brother and I can’t wait to visit Ventura, and train with the 10P Ventura family again.
