Martin's been living and breathing BJJ for 18 years, teaching both the young ones and the not-so-young. It's not just about his accolades (though he's got plenty). You can feel his dedication every time he instructs. He is always looking out for latest trend and shows a mix of modern + traditional jiu jitsu. Then you've got Jyn. 15 years of BJJ under her belt, focusing on women and children's training. The passion and expertise she brings to her classes? Inspiring. It's not about the trophies, but if you ever wanted to know, she's got her share of achievements (World Champion). What I truly love about Excelsior is that it's more than just training; it's a community. Both Martin and Jyn pour their hearts into what they do, and it makes a world of difference. If you're looking to dive into BJJ or just seeking a fresh perspective, drop by. You won't regret it.
Martin and Jyn are awesome! They are incredibly friendly and welcoming to new guests. They really care about their students and are thoughtful of the different levels of students that participate. Each student gets the proper attention they deserve. Parking is never an issue for me. I usually park right in front or just around the corner. Most importantly, my daughter loves coming to class. Kids have the opportunity to learn with a gi (MWF) and without a gi (TR). Honestly, this helps out since we only own one gi. In addition, 5PM kids classes are also very convenient when coming after work and school. Support up-and-coming local businesses!
I was excited to train again with the crew here at Excelsior. The coaches Jyn and Martin are long time training partners of mine and I have nothing but great things to say. It’s a blackbelt wife and husband combination, something extremely unique in this sport and what stands out as something I can only get here at Excelsior. Two different games, two different (but complimentary) perspectives, two different strengths, all rolled into one passion. I have to also mention they compete often and it shows in their instruction (we’re talking Jyn is a literal World Champ and Martin is heavily accomplished himself) Super friendly, they are passionate about this martial art, and deeply care about their students. They used to be in a smaller location before the panorama in Pacifica and since opening here, there’s plenty of students that came up with them. I think that’s testament to the atmosphere they foster. Something I try to shoot for at my o
I’ve trained at many places, but Excelsior is unique. Whether you want to learn self-defense, be a jiu-jitsu hobbyist or want to compete, this place covers all bases. If you are experienced or brand new, the environment is welcoming, inclusive and positive. The coaches Martin and Jyn are knowledgeable, patient and passionate about the art. If you are looking for a gym to train hard, have fun and be part of an awesome community, I highly recommend checking Excelsior Martial Arts Academy out!
Got the chance to visit Excelsior Martial Arts and rolled with their gi class/open mat and had a great time! The space is ample but feels much bigger due to the high ceilings. Everything, including the mats were sanitized and cleaned which is always important. Martin and Jyn are the two Black Belts that run the school and put a lot of time and effort into making the experience a good one. They are both technical and have been around the jiu jitsu scene for some time so rest assured that you will have a good experience.
If you're looking for you a family-friendly, comfortable, and supportive environment to start your journey in BJJ, this is it. Jyn and Martin really lower the barrier to entry for a complex martial art by nurturing a friendly and collaborative space for all levels of trainees. The playlist rocks too! Jam to KidzBop for the kids classes and Hip-Hop when the adults warmups start!
