When I first heard that Paul was moving to LA to open Frogtown jiu-jitsu I knew it would be my new home... Frogtown jiu-jitsu is hands down the most beautiful academy I have ever trained at. It is also the cleanest academy I have ever been in which is very important to me as I admittingly have an OCD issue regarding cleanliness. ;) The mats and facilities are always clean. The mat space is open and bright due to all the glass windows and feels Zen-like with the plants and natural wood colors used throughout the academy. For those of you who may be new to jiu-jitsu and may not have heard of Paul Schreiner, he is known to be considered one of the best instructors in the world. You can easily Google his name and read about how well respected of an instructor he is. I had always heard about how good of an instructor he was and now I see why...I literally learn something new from him and/or new details in every class I have been in. Having h
When I first started jiujitsu several years ago at the Marcelo Garcia Academy in NYC as a beginner with no grappling experience whatsoever, Paul was my first teacher. For the first several months of training, I exclusively took his fundamentals class for beginners. During that time I learned a lot from him - both about technique, but also about the history of the sport. Paul's been around the jiujitsu scene for a long time and has so many great stories to share. As an educator, what stood out for me in Paul's teaching is his attention to detail, his ability to explain things for a diverse audience, and his patience and grace. Paul's teaching was so popular across a wide range of practitioners that you would often see a number of upper belts taking his fundamentals class. Paul has the ability to teach jiujitsu to the absolute beginner stepping onto the mats for the first time to world champion level competitors. He can explain "old schoo
I’ve trained at Frogtown Jiu-Jitsu a couple of times now while visiting LA, and it’s quickly become one of my favorite spots to drop in. I own a Jiu-Jitsu gym myself, so when I travel and visit other academies, I tend to notice a lot of the little things… how the space is kept, how the classes are run, how it feels to be on the mat. Frogtown just really impressed me. The gym is beautiful. It’s not just clean, it’s calm, well-designed, and has a great energy the second you walk in. Paul’s a fantastic instructor. Even when he’s teaching something basic, he brings a level of clarity and thought that’s hard to come by. It’s concept-driven and super easy to understand, even if you’ve been training for years. Veronica, who works the front desk and manages the gym, is incredibly kind and matches the energy of the gym! What really stands out, though, is the vibe. You’ve got world-class competitors and total beginners all training together, and
As a new white belt at Frogtown Jiu Jitsu, I couldn’t have asked for a better place to start my journey. From the moment I stepped onto the mats, I was welcomed into a supportive and encouraging community. Everyone—coaches and fellow students alike—has been incredibly patient and helpful, making me feel comfortable even as a complete beginner. Coach Paul is amazing. He breaks down techniques in a way that’s easy to understand, even for someone with no prior experience. He takes the time to answer questions, offer guidance, and make sure everyone is learning at their own pace. Training here is both challenging and rewarding. If you’re thinking about starting Jiu Jitsu, I can’t recommend Frogtown enough. It’s the perfect place to learn, grow, and be part of a great community!
Whether you're brand new to Jiu Jitsu or have a few years of experience, there's no better place to train in Los Angeles than Frogtown. Paul Schreiner is a world-renowned instructor, deeply respected in the Jiu Jitsu community for both his technical knowledge and his ability to teach it clearly. If you have a question, Paul almost always has the answer and if not, he’ll point you toward the right tools or resources to figure it out. The gym itself is beautiful, clean, thoughtfully designed, and a great place to spend time. The atmosphere is welcoming, with a strong sense of community and no ego. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Frogtown to any of my friends who want to train.
