Russ has been my instructor for the past 11 years. His depth of knowledge is what sets him apart from other instructors. Russ understands the "why" behind every step of everything he teaches. The result is very efficient teaching that he can adjust for every student's body and/or skill level. Russ understands and teaches not only the physical aspect of martial arts, but also the mental and emotional states that go along with physical success. Martial arts should have a positive influence throughout your life and this is a cornerstone of Russ Miura Jiu Jitsu teachings. Russ's teachings have made me a better person. I have seen his students consistently exceed their expectations in improving their bodies. I have also seen his students learn humility, confidence, patience, and leadership through jiu jitsu. As for the gym itself, it is a wonderful environment to learn and train. Everything in the gym is brand-new and of the highest quality.
Such a wonderful place to train. I trained there for 5 years before life/distance/traffic forced me to change gyms to somewhere closer. All classes are taught by the 3rd degree black belt owner, including the kids. You are unlikely to find that at any other gym. Many of the guys have been with Russ a decade or two. He also has a kinesiology degree and can give guidance on general fitness training, weight lifting, diet, ect.... While jiu jitsu is a sport it also has alot of relevance to self defense (especially for women). Russ uses his experience in mma and other related work to help integrate these concepts into classes. There are also several police officers that train there that really let me extend the knowledge of the sport into how that would work in a self defense situation as well. Very easy freeway access Lots of parking Super clean mats Kids program with individualized attention that is also integrated with some state physical
Short Review: Come check out a class, you won't regret it. Tell them you read Panda's review. Long Review: Panda here. Sixteen years later, I'm still training with Russ Miura. In 24 years of training Jiu Jitsu, I've come to know what the differences are regarding Instructors. Ok-Instructors are like Road Maps. You learn what they have to show you & then you decide what your path will be. Some students will find their path, while others may still be looking for the best route. Good-Instructors are like Treasure Maps. You learn what they have to show you & then they show you their pathways. They may not be the best pathways for you initially, but having direction is good and eventually you'll fit into the route. Amazing-Instructors like Russ Miura are like a Road Map with GPS. You learn what he has to show you & once you choose your path, Russ will help you refine it as he guides you through it, even though it's different from his path. H
The best instruction for jiujitsu, boxing, wrestling, and/or a combo of the three, in California hands down. Olympic level training with a personal focus on your individual growth at an excellerated, streamlined rate. 9 years of training under Russ and it has been one of the best decisions of my life. Russ Miura is a state wrestling champion, won Grapplers Quest 3 among countless other tournaments, veteran of EBI, ADCC, and MMA. His quest is spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional, and this permeates the school and therefore his students. Serving as a mentor on and off the mat Russ has been pivotal in the growth of so many people in positive, long-lasting ways. Great school for everyone; kids, and beginners to black belts.
I have been learning the art of Jiu Jitsu and all of the attributes that come with it for the past 5 years under Russ at his gym. I can without a doubt say that Russ Miura Jiu Jitsu and the community there have played a large role in developing the person I am today. I have over time improved my confidence, discipline, physical abilities, mental strength, and became part of a family I will never forget. There are no downsides to doing jiu jitsu and if you’re looking for a gym to call your own, look no further.
I was visiting Irvine for a couple of days and reached out to train—Russ Miura replied immediately. From the moment I walked in, Russ and his wife were incredibly welcoming. They made me feel like I already knew them and like I’d been part of the gym for a long time. The training environment was friendly, technical, and really well run. Whether you’re just in town for a short stay or you’re a local looking for a solid place to train, I’d definitely recommend checking out Russ Miura’s gym. Great people, great vibes, and great jiu-jitsu. Hope to visit again soon!
