This is a great place for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu!!! Last spring I started looking for a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school in Huntington Beach where I could begin training. I was a complete beginner to BJJ and I’m an older athlete at 55. I checked out some notable studios in Huntington Beach but one comment that I read prompted me to also check-out Gracie Barra Huntington Beach which at that time had been open for about one year. I made a visit to GBHB and met Professor Otavio Sousa and I signed up to start classes the next day. It was one of the best things that I’ve ever done. Even as an older student I feel that this school embraces the Gracie Barra ideal of “BJJ for everyone.” As far as range of students goes there's a buzzing kids’ school full of youngsters having a blast, a few folks in my age range and then many in all the in-between age ranges. What an awesome place to train Jiu Jitsu. The mats are clean, facilities are kept well. There are sparring partners of all levels. Rolling on the mats is like rolling with good friends because everyone is so helpful encouraging and supportive, but definitely pushes your game. Many great words can be said for the coaching family of Professor Otavio Sousa and Coach Marina. The instruction is world class which goes without saying after seeing the multiple world championship metals of Professor's on the wall. Moreover, Professor Otavio really cares and puts the time and energy into his instruction for all of his classes from kids to adult. Try a class and you will immediately see what I am talking about. This gym is a true gem. If you are fortunate enough to be able to train here, then you are a very fortunate person. Come try a class if you have never trained, or if you are visiting then have a roll with us. Either way, see you on the mat!
Professor Otavio is a 3x (and current) Black Belt World Champ and he personally teaches every single kids' class. Beyond his amazing achievements and credentials, he is one of the nicest, most humble, and truly encouraging people- you will ever meet. Coach Marina, Professor Otavio's wife, is so lovely, caring, and welcoming with everyone, especially the kids that train here. Her nurturing spirit creates a great balance to the challenges and rigors of learning Jiu-Jitsu. Together, they have created a gym that radiates positive energy and warmth. Their two kids, Yasmin and Pepe, also help to coach the kids class and serve as wonderful role models to the younger kids. Thank you GBHB family, we love you!
Gracie Barra Huntington Beach is what one should think of when considering a classic Brazilian Jiujitsu school. The location is easily accessible, the parking is good. When walking in, you have a welcoming atmosphere, with the reception desk right up front onhe left. All around the school you can see the student artwork and the accolades of the main instructor, Otavio Souza, himself a multiple time Brazilian and world champion. The school offered clean changing rooms, clean mat area, plenty of storage for your gym bag. The space coming onto the mat gives enough room to put your shoes/slips for easy access. Professor Otavio is very welcoming and friendly, his students reflect him and are also very open and amicable. The entire school presents a family vibe. My daughter and I train at his Gracie Barra location, In my opinion this is great place to learn jiu-jitsu. The head instructor (Professor Otavio, Multiple time world champion in BJJ) is an amazing instructor. He is able to explain techniques in a way that children can understand and execute well. Coaches Ron, Craig and Collin also assists in teaching classes, they are very patient and provide great details to students. What I really like about Gracie Barra Huntington Beach aside from the detailed instruction that they teach during class is that the coaches at this location understand how to deal with children since they have kids too and as a parent that is important for me.
This will be my first time ever leaving a review. I feel it is so important to tell other parents how INCREDIBLE Gracie Barra Jiu Jitsu has been for our two children. The professor (coach) should win an award for best ever at teaching kids to be patient in lines, to be quite, to listen, and of course jiu Jitsu. He has helped so many children who have had behavioral issues. Every single parent I talk to (and there are a lot) tells the same story at how much this has helped their children. It is so good for kids, both boys and girls, it helps their confidence and will help them if they ever need to defend themselves. Kids from age 3 to adults this is the best place I have ever seen to learn from. I have been to many many martial art gyms in my years of training, but this is the best. Otavio (the professor) and his wife Natalia are two of the nicest people I have ever met. I strongly recommend signing up for the classes!
