Matua Jiu Jitsu in Rancho Cordova has been such a great place for my husband to start his BJJ journey. He had zero background in jiu jitsu and the black belt coaches have been incredibly helpful and patient. The small class sizes have been invaluable for beginners because everyone gets hands on instruction and real feedback. The atmosphere here is very welcoming and not intimidating for new people. It is a great group of people and the coaches are extremely knowledgeable. My husband has already learned so much in a short amount of time and comes home excited to train again. If you are new to Brazilian jiu jitsu or looking for a high quality BJJ gym in Rancho Cordova, this is a great place to start.
I just wrapped up my first 4 weeks at Matua BJJ and I so glad that I found this place! Even though they've only been open for a month, the level of talent on the mat is unbelievable. I've already met and rolled with at least 10 different black belts-each one super chill, approachable and eager to share their knowledge. The atmosphere is exactly what you would hope to find n a great BJJ school: everyone's super friendly, welcoming and the best part is that there are absolutely no egos. Everyone, from the Day 1s to the Black Belts, is there to train and improve. If you're looking for a place to train BJJ, whether it's your first time rolling to you were born on a mat, I highly recommend you check out Matua BJJ. Amazing people, amazing instruction and a truly positive environment to grow in.
Matua Jiu-Jitsu Academy is an incredible place to train! The environment is family-oriented, welcoming, and full of positive energy. The instructors are amazing—very knowledgeable, patient, and detail-oriented, making every class enjoyable and educational. The kids’ classes are fun, engaging, and provide a safe space for all students to learn and grow. I also love that they offer a playroom for kids while parents train—it shows how much they care about creating a true family atmosphere. Overall, my experience has been nothing short of excellent, and I can’t wait to go back!
I recently visited Matua and found it to be welcoming with coaches who clearly know their craft and are committed to helping students at all levels. The class I attended was well-structured: a clear warm-up, technique instruction with step-by-step breakdowns, and then a rolling session with partners of varying skill levels. The vibe struck a nice balance between challenge and support people were pushing themselves but without heavy ego or intimidation. As a parent I was fascinated with their kids area. Not many gyms offer this! A great choice if you’re serious about learning jiu-jitsu in a positive community setting. Check out their Instagram @matuabjj for their weekly schedule!!
Before going in, I have never tried Jiu-Jitsu and was very nervous. When I went inside I was greeted by their welcoming staff and made me feel comfortable. They showed me where I can put my stuff and brought me to the mat of where the class is taught. Again, I was very nervous but the instructors make me feel comfortable and had me eager to learn. After completing the class, I was happy that I tried and will continue to go to learn the sport thanks to the staff at Matua! P.S They have a class for kids too! All kids looked engaged and having fun while learning.
A very welcoming, CLEAN BJJ gym! I see a community of uplifting positivity here every time I go train. The gym is strongly rooted in community and makes it so easy for someone to take their first step into their Jiu jitsu journey. They are well aware that everyone has their own lives and responsibilities so they are happy to see you whenever you make it in! Matua gym brings a breath of fresh air to Jiu jitsu and I highly recommend training here!
