I've been a student of Coach Kris for almost a year. I initially enrolled to Matadero Brea to have an engaging form of cardio. The gym itself is always organized, the mats are clean and provide adequate cushioning, and the environment is very welcoming. When I first enrolled, I was unsure of what to expect. Besides messing around with buddies, I had never properly trained in any sort of combat sport. Coach Kris has made the learning process fun and exciting. He is extremely knowledgable and is always eager to share that knowledge with us. I never imagined myself competing, but Coach has brought out the best of me when it comes to the sport. Iron sharpens iron, and that is the culture here at Matadero!
Been training at Matadero Jiu Jitsu for almost a year after bouncing around a bunch of big-name gyms. This place just hits different. Coach Kris is battle-tested but super friendly — keeps things fun without watering it down. Training is intuitive, not mindless reps, and you actually get personal attention. Try getting your name remembered at a franchise gym. Mats are clean, the whole spot’s solid, and the neighborhood’s one of the nicest I’ve trained in. My 10yr old daughter began training here in April. I am extremely satisfied with the knowledge, experience and genuine care that Coach Kris displays for all of his students. My daughter is excited and motivated to continue training and that has everything to do with Coach’s approach and encouragement. He is stern yet fun with the kids and knows exactly how to balance each session. The gym itself is clean and tidy and best of all, has AC!! If your child is interested in training BJJ, Matadero Brea’s welcoming environment is perfect!!
I cannot say enough great things about Coach Kris and this gym. My sons have tried two other gyms, and due to scheduling and coaching styles, we kept searching and found this place. We are set in stone here. My oldest was training for 7 months at the other places and did not quite seem to be able to put the whole picture together and got blown out at his first tournament. We have been here 4-5 months and in this short time, he is winning medals at tournaments and getting real wins. Coach here is instilling discipline, leadership and pushing the kids to be the best versions of themselves with the right amount of pressure, support and empathy. I highly recommend this gym and can say this place has become family.
Came upon this gym while browsing MMA gyms near work. Coach Kris is an amazing teacher both in jiu jitsu and kickboxing, and is a just a stand up guy. I walked in 10 months ago as a nervous and lost white belt, and now I will be competing in a month. There is a lot of opportunity to get personal attention or ask questions during class and focuses on practical skills with lots of rolling/sparring to actually apply what was drilled. The mats, bathrooms, and rest of the gym are spotless. The other members are humble and welcoming. Truly recommend this place to everyone.
We feel incredibly lucky to have found such a phenomenal Jiu-Jitsu coach for our kids. From day one, Coach Kris has gone above and beyond — not just in teaching the techniques of the sport, but in building character, confidence, and discipline in every student. The techniques he uses in teaching are fun and easy for kids to understand.
