More than a gym, Team Monstro is now family and our 2nd home. We have been training here consistently for two years. From the moment you walk in the door and step onto the mats you are welcomed by Andi and Shaq Cruz along with their students. Affiliated with Master Fabio Santos from San Diego CA, Andi and Shaq together bring the best of jiu jitsu to each student. Not only group training but when working with them, you will receive individualized guidance to help improve your game. They are both motivating and patient with each and every student. They take the time to push their students while at the same time making sure new students feel comfortable and understand the movement being taught. As a globetrotting blue belt, I dropped into this academy while I was staying my parents in Surprise, AZ. I prefer smaller, more casual class sizes so, despite the limited mat space, Team Monstro fit the bill. Shaq and Andy are very good instructors and run a casual, family-oriented academy that's great for children and a healthy, playful atmosphere for us older grapplers. The classes I've attended resembled more open mats than regimented competition boot camps. But everybody I rolled with was very respectful and welcoming to this stranger from San Francisco. If you're in the far west side of the valley, this is a convenient location to work on your jiu jitsu.
I love this jiu jitsu academy!! Great family oriented gym. Hands down best price in town. Instructors Shaq and Andi Cruz both come from a legendary lineage. The amount of knowledge they both have still amazes me to this day. My 3 kids and I have been attending since June of 2023 and my only regret is not starting years sooner. I've lost 35 lbs since joining and feel great. My son occasionally takes private lessons in boxing and muay Thai taught by Shaq. And I can definitely see a HUGE improvement in both his stand up and ground game. It's a good feeling knowing my kids can take care of themselves if push comes to shove, especially my two girls. Whether you want to get in shape or learn self defense I highly recommend Team Monstro Jiu Jitsu.
Trained here for a couple weeks before going to another gym, due to friends. It is very family oriented. Shaq and Andy are great people but they also have careers which kinda sucks for me because I would like the option to train in the morning. Prices are the best in town, overall I may go back to train with these guys cause the people were cool and I like Both Shaq and Andy. I just needed more room (they now have moved down the street to a bigger building, much more room!!!!) and more hours open.
Brazilian jiu jitsu is hard but fun!! This place is awesome and a good place to learn jiu jitsu and I highly recommend going to this place to learn jiu jitsu.
