We are so happy we found this jiu-jitsu gym! They truly have classes for everyone. Our kids absolutely love coming to class—they’re challenged in the best way and actually enjoy that the classes are tough. We’ve seen so much growth in them, both physically and mentally. The owners are originally from California and bring a fresh, unique style that you don’t really find at other gyms around here. My husband and I both attend the adult classes, and they are always challenging—we leave every class sweaty and feeling accomplished, which we really appreciate. They even offer women’s classes, which is such a huge plus. The environment is welcoming, motivating, and supportive for the whole family. You will not regret signing up here!
This past summer I went to Brownsville to visit some family and while on my trip I decided to try out jiujitsu at Checkmat BTX and I was hooked from the beginning! Professor Jose is amazing and taught me so many things when I took his classes. He persuaded me to keep going once I got back home, so I found the nearest Checkmat near me and started taking classes there. Thank you so much to the staff at Checkmat BTX for making me feel welcomed and setting me on the right path to go forward with my jiujitsu journey. I will be coming back when I see my family again.
This place made me fall in love with the art again. The atmosphere is wonderful and an excellent place for kids to train and most importantly learn about themselves. The kids class is high energy and hard yet fun allowing the kids to say engaged. The adult class is just as engaging with plenty or people to learn from. Prof Jose has a significant amount of experience and also keeps an open mind to learning from everyone else which is rare in Martial Arts. A strong team with family values and a love for teaching. If you want to get in better shape, increase your confidence through self efficacy, compete at the highest level that you can or if life has handed you a bad set of cards and just need some friends I encourage you to stop by and try a class! Professor Jose is an incredible coach with a deep knowledge and understanding of the game. He is super patient and his instructions/teachings are well explained. He keeps a super clean sanctuary and it’s obvious he takes pride in helping students become the best version of themselves that they can be, whatever stage in the game they are. I’ve been in many schools where the name of the game is to smash newcomers, but professor Jose let me express my abilities, let me work from my tool bag, explained how I could be better in certain areas and carefully led me through an hour of rolling and I didn’t leave injured at all. What an amazing experience!!! So much respect for Checkmate Jiujitsu and professor Jose. I will be back to continue becoming the best/strongest version of myself that I can be.
My wife and I just moved down down from the Houston area and were looking for a gym to train at with a good friendly environment. We were instantly welcomed by the team at Checkmat BTX and were made to feel at home. Profesor Gutierrez is an excellent instructor with pristine technique. My wife and I have made Checkmat BTX our jiu-jitsu home down here in the RGV and couldn't be happier.
Outstanding jiujitsu academy! The wealth of jiujitsu knowledge that profesor Gutierrez has to offer is hard to fathom. A great place with both an atmosphere for competitors that want to train hard, or those who just want to improve their Bjj game. Very welcoming environment for individuals or families. Can’t recommend it enough. Go experience it for yourself!
