Great training location conveniently located in the heart of the secret city. I trained there for two days while visiting family in Oakridge and could not be more impressed with the quality and depth of knowledge the instructor brings from his 30+ years of martial arts experience. The BJJ instruction is grounded solidly in the fundamentals of both self defense and competition depending on what you want to train on. The instructor works with your experience level, goals, and everything you bring to the gym to ensure you get quality instruction that plug those holes in your game that we all have. His kickboxing instruction is phenomenal and focuses on getting your upper body to work in harmony with your lower body through drills, pad work, and sparring. If you are looking at trying Jiu-Jitsu for you or your child in the oak ridge/ Knoxville area, I highly recommend trying mad science judo and Jiu-Jitsu. I train and live in Louisiana and I visit the area a couple times a year and have been looking for a go to gym while I'm in the area. I visited an open mat on Friday, and immediately felt a good vibe the moment I walked in from the instructor and a couple of his students.Ted ( the black belt instructor) treated me like a valued member of his academy and personally showed me some techniques I could improve while rolling with him. The school had great people, great atomsphere, and great instruction. By the end of the training, the people there had me feeling like I was an actual member of the school. I can't describe enough how encouraging and great the people were here. I highly recommend once again, go give this place a try. You will not be disappointed. I will visit Everytime I am back
I started at Mad Science as a new bjj white belt at age 46. Six years later and I'm still there, about 5 days a week. Ted, the head coach, is a great person and a top level instructor. He has cultivated a warm and friendly culture that inspires people to want to show up and learn. My young son does the kids' classes and loves it. If you live in the greater Knoxville area, check it out and you'll be glad you did. I love my Mad Science family!
Ted is a wonderful teacher who cares about his students on and off the mat. He is welcoming to everyone, inexperienced or experienced. MSJJ focuses on self defense and safety over stylish fads. Although Ted will support those that want to compete, he won't pressure you into doing it. He also cares about the BJJ community in Knoxville and the south east and welcomes visitors from the local area. Definitely worth trying a class.
Mad Science is a fantastic gym for Judo, BJJ and kickboxing. There is plenty of mat space with several separate areas for various needs. Ted is a wonderful instructor with a wealth of knowledge. Both my husband and myself have been training there for almost two years. The cultural is respectful and supportive of all levels of skill, age and gender. Ladies don’t be afraid to come and give these sports a try!
I was looking for a place to train while I was on a business trip to Oak Ridge. I contacted coach Ted and he was responsive and welcoming. Had a great experience rolling at Mad Science! Coach Ted and his students were all good people and fun to train with. I'll be back the next time I find myself in the Oak Ridge area.
