This is by far the best jiujitsu gym in the Charleston, South Carolina area for both adults and children. Professor Rafaello Oliveira is a former UFC fighter from Brazil, who is truly passionate and takes a very humble and dedicated approach in making sure each student receives exactly what they want from jiujitsu. The fellow students are all like family and welcome guests and new students with open arms. I feel honored and certainly lucky to be part of Houzn. From plenty of scheduled classes for all schedules, to a great kids program, and even competitors or advanced program. There's truly something for everyone at Houzn jiujitsu. Ossss!
I can't even begin to say how AMAZING HouZn JJ Academy is!! & Just how happy we are to have found them!! HouZn doesn't just teach BJJ ..... HouZn embodies the concept that "mental and emotional states play the most significant part in one’s overall health". Which to me, is absolutely awesome! HouZn radiates positivity & hard work!! We joined the HouZn team a few months ago & we are SO HAPPY that we did. Raph & Wanessa are awesome!! Our 9 yr old son has severe ADHD & they have welcomed him w open arms. He loves it!! The whole HouZn family/team is amazing....from Raph & Wanessa to all the coaches & esp his teammates. HouZn teaches not only BJJ & techniques but also teaches that with hard work anything is possible. & On a side note ....the academy is absolutely gorgeous!! Wanessa did a fantastic job designing it!! It feels warm & inviting, not at all intimidating like some gyms can be. We highly recommend HouZn!!
Coach Rafa is AMAZING! Because he is a UFC veteran, his unique style of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is effective in high level BJJ competitions, elite MMA competitions, & self defense. That's the trifecta & should be the criteria for how you choose a gym. Combine his technical expertise with the level of care & generosity that he has for each student & it doesn't take long to realize there really isn't a choice for any other martial arts school near his gym: he's the best. Do yourself a GIGANTIC favor and go see for yourself why this gym is the place to call home for your martial arts and/or fitness journeh.
Houzn Jiu Jitsu Academy is by far the best all around academy in the Charleston, SC area. Professor Rafaello is both equal parts classy-gentleman and badass-surgical BJJ practitioner. Every 3rd Saturday of the month they hold a “Open Houz” and host those from other places/academies for a free event that includes snacks, music, and open mat. I cannot recommend this place enough for both the environment/vibes and the competitive atmosphere.
Rafaello is an amazing coach! This is a safe environment to train in. I’ve trained with some of the best BJJ people there are, & Raf knows how to coach! The kids have lots of fun while learning confidence & staying fit. Plus, the kids have been winning medals all over the South!
This review is long overdue because Rafaello and Wanessa go above and beyond for every one of their students. Their new facility is absolutely top notch, but what really sets Houzn apart from anything else around Charleston is the people and the community that they’ve built. Everyone is welcoming, helpful, respectful, and super fun to be around and train with. Highly recommend for people of all ages and levels!
