My wife and I got a chance to visit this awesome academy while on a work trip. The facility was nice and clean, small changing rooms but plenty of room to store bags. The mats were clean, they had another matted room for muay Thai and a room with, what looked like a full size boxing ring. Really great place full of classes for any martial artist. Professor Malachy was great and very welcoming. He even let my kids join in on some of the kids class games. The drills in the adult jiu jitsu class were my favorite. He had us doing types of drills I’ve never done before. Really great class. All the students were friendly and welcoming as well. No egos all great rolls. If I lived near here this would be my gym. We very much enjoyed being in this gym.
Black Label Martial Arts is honestly a fantastic place to train, and you feel a real sense of positive energy as soon as you walk in. Sarah is a big part of that welcoming vibe. She's always ready with a smile, and I remember her being so helpful and just generally making things feel easy when I was grabbing a hoodie as a gift back in June. You also see how great she is with the kids, joking around and handing out lollipops. It creates such a relaxed feel. The coaches here are also fantastic. They're clearly passionate and create a really supportive learning environment. You can tell everyone, both the instructors and the people training, genuinely enjoy being there. It makes for a really great community. It feels like the whole team has an easygoing and welcoming manner and has built something special. Visited here from out of town, everyone was more than welcoming and super easy to hop right into a class. Being a purple belt visiting schools sometimes you never know if you’re going to fit in or not but the members were all fantastic and respectful, great rolls too. Malachy was my Jiu Jitsu instructor and I honestly learned so much of small details I can take back with me that will change my jiu jitsu forever. He said when drilling, don’t drill for the finish, drill for the entries. Because if you can enter into the position with success you can easily finish. This changed my whole way of thinking about how I drill, also I was able to perfect small details on lasso sweeps and side control to tighten my game up even more. They treated me with respect, yet pushed me when I needed it. Which felt like my home gym. This will be my place to train every time I’m in town!
As a single mom, there were certain values and characteristics I looked for before my son joined Black Label over a year ago. After the first day of being in this gym, we knew it was the right fit. Malachy is patient with the kids, yet knows when to be assertive at the same time. He has some of the most dedicated assistant coaches I’ve ever seen, which is an extension of what he has created. The techniques/skills being taught here, results in our team taking 1st place at most of the competitions. My son has really flourished at this gym. Not only has he become more respectful at home, he has developed quite the passion and dedication to Jiu-Jitsu, which has been pretty awesome to see.
Black Label Martial Arts is the top gym in Charleston for anyone looking to train in a welcoming yet challenging environment. The instructors are phenomenal, and the community is incredibly supportive. A special shoutout to Sarah, who went above and beyond to help me pick out the perfect MMA gloves. She’s always there to answer any questions and provide guidance for anybody training. Her kindness and expertise truly makes a difference. Awesome school for training and getting prepped for any tournament or real life self defense situation. My jiu jitsu journey started in San Diego, CA and my recent move brought me to South Carolina. I started training at Black Label in July of 2024 and found great community with all of the instructors and students. There are lots of tough training partners and good rolls. Looking forward to the continued development.
