The day I walked through the doors and spoke with Tony White (owner/instructor) I knew this was the BJJ school for me. The way Tony informed me he was planning to structure learning self defense was not to throw you into "free rolling" right away. He'd get you established first in some basic fundamentals so you have some idea of how to grapple. He has a very positive demeanor, he's always welcoming of questions. He is engaging with you while you're working techniques, always encouraging us. Very approachable and is a terrific coach. It is amazing how he ties all of the self defense applications together in one class. Shoshin JiuJitsu is structured while fun and light hearted academy. Respectful and welcoming to all. Family friendly and most of all, safe. Team work is encouraged and I've enjoyed all the classes as well as positive vibes from everyone I've met on the mat. There are kids classes as well as separate adult classes of all age
I have been to several Jiu-jitsu Schools in my lifetime. Shoshin Jiu Jitsu Stands out and is easily placed at the top of my list. The atmosphere that Tony and the other members have cultivated is amazing! There are people from many walks of life and they are all just as equally helpful and friendly, as the next. Fundamentals are instructed from a Self Defense perspective, and delivered/drilled in a manner that maximizes effectiveness, without sacrificing safety of the members. The state-of-the-art mat system helps to ensure the safety of members and is extremely comfortable to roll around on and cushions you perfectly, should you need it. Classes are approximately 1hr, with time before/after to Roll, Drill, or Review with Tony or other members. There is also a kids class, 3 days a week. My daughter was looking for a new challenging experience after 9 years of gymnastics for age 2 to now 11. So we attended an open class orientation night at Shoshin Jiu Jitsu. Tony immediately welcomed us in even though the open class was technically for adults. With great passion and knowledge, Tony explained the history and philosophy behind Jiu Jitsu and gave an introduction into what we could expect from the classes. My daughter was immediately intrigued and started attending classes regularly 5 days later and has been going consistently twice a week for 3 months. She absolutely loves it. While this may be an intimidating experience for some, Tony does a great job of meeting people where they are and making the curriculum accessible to everyone. It's very obvious that he has created an inclusive community where everyone feels comfortable but also challenged at the same time. Every adult there has gone out of their way to work with my
I have tried out nearly every BJJ gym/school here in Erie, and although I have nothing negative to say about any of those places, the curriculum just clicks with me at Shoshin. I'm a new dad so I don't have many opportunities to make most of the classes, but with the 1 class a week I'm able to do, I learn so much, and my fellow team mates help so much and Shoshin is just a great environment to be in and learn in. Also, the positive environment has been helping me to think more positively, gives me more confidence and I've been a lot more health conscious ever since I started my Jiu jitsu journey. I can't express enough how thankful I am for Tony and everyone at Shoshin. In my view, if you are in the Erie area, and are considering Jiu jitsu, Shoshin is the best place hands down.
My experience at Shoshin Jiu-Jitsu Erie, PA has been nothing short of exceptional. Tony is 100% truly invested in everyones education whether they're new to jiu-jitsu or have been at it for years. He's willing to take the time to make sure everyone gets their moves right so no one is accidentally injured. The school has a very family friendly environment. Tony is a great instructor who is knowledgeable and always willing to help! As a woman who's completely brand new to this, I've experienced nothing but kindness in this male dominant activity. I look forward to continue learning, and gaining more confidence in not just my ability, but myself as well.
