I have a 7 yr old & a 5 yr old that attend Gaddis Brothers' Martial Arts; they both started at age 4. Both boys are relatively shy. But from the introductory class, Sensei engages them in a way that they get excited about karate. In each session he teaches valuable lessons about discipline, respect, self defense, and courtesy. Through the warm-up and learning the different attacks, blocks & katas the kids develop coordination, and they become more confident because of what they accomplish. The kids get to have fun too- playing games at the end of class like Sensei (Simon) Says, Yoga ball bowling, or sometimes the kids just attack him with pool noodles. Sensei has done a fantastic job of not only teaching students of all ages, but he has really developed his dojo into a community through events like tournaments, banquets, picnics and parties.
Gaddis Brothers' Martial Arts is a great school!! My kids and I have been training here for two years. John Gaddis is an incredible teacher and is especially gifted working with kids. He has a great way of balancing fun with discipline/structure. I have seen both of my kids improve in focus, listening, confidence, and perseverance. GBMA is not just a place to take karate lessons, it is a place to be a part of a community. There are many extra events such as pizza parties, pumpkin carving, mother's/father's day class, and a yearly dojo picnic. Finally, I have been very impressed with how the school has handled the shutdown/quarantine. Lessons have continued as before via Zoom, with more opportunities for 1:1 instruction. Sensei Gaddis even gave out free pizza to dojo families to do a virtual pizza party. I would highly recommend this dojo!!!
I cannot say enough good things about Sensei. He is not just a phenomenal karate instructor, but a truly exceptional person. His classes are the highlight of the week for every student — the excitement and eagerness to attend is something really special. You can feel the energy and respect in the room the moment he walks in. He teaches with a perfect balance of discipline, encouragement, and kindness. Whether a student is just starting out or has been training for years, he meets them where they are and helps them grow with patience and skill. It’s clear that he genuinely cares about each student’s progress, both in karate and in life. What sets him apart even more is his character — humble, respectful, compassionate, and deeply inspiring. He leads by example and teaches values and life lessons. It’s rare to find someone so loved and respected by both students and parents alike. We’re incredibly grateful to be part of his classes. He’s
John Gaddis has certainly found his calling in life. His passion for the martial arts is evident, and he brings that to class every day. He is very engaging and great with kids. The dojo is a little bit a victim of its own success. Class sizes are very large, and there is very little one-on-one interaction with the students in the larger classes, though Sensei Gaddis clearly tries his best. Despite this, students are often seen making mistakes that go uncorrected. The classes for youth and “little dragons” mostly focus on confidence and a loose knowledge of karate basics. Sensei is not strict on students really knowing what they are doing, and belts become something of participation trophies. This is great for children learning karate for confidence and respect, but if your focus is hardcore karate, you won’t find it here.
My oldest son started classes at GBMA about 2.5 years ago. John and his assistants are amazing with the kids. I could see the change in Coleman almost instantaneously. Of course I enrolled my younger son as soon as he was old enough. I can not say enough good things about this dojo. An now, with all of the craziness going on, we are doing virtual class on zoom. That gives me time to myself while Sensei John teaches them in the living room. The effort that they have shown to keep my children involved in their black belt quest is unsurpassable. Involving my boys in this dojo has taught them, respect, patience, caring, and self defense among other things. This was by far one on my best decisions. Thank you GBMA!
My kids love learning karate here. Sensei Gaddis is wonderful with the kids -- warm, nurturing, motivational, funny, fun, safety-conscious & sincerely dedicated to the martial arts. As a parent, I also appreciate that: 1) my kids are learning self-defense techniques, in addition to strengthening their bodies & minds (learning to stay focused/goal-oriented/disciplined), 2) the class sizes are relatively small, ensuring that each child gets plenty of attention/instruction, and 3) unlike other martial arts schools in the area, this school does not charge extra fees for belt testing. I highly recommend this school!!
