I joined Spar last month as a way to force myself into feeling better after a year long battle with lung issues caused by COVID. I sat with the owner Bill after speaking to his daughter about joining. I wanted to make sure that this was a wise decision for someone like me, who was not in the greatest of shape. He and I sat for a good while going over the classes and he made me feel like I was more than welcome. I signed up to every class they have and although I struggled to keep the schedule ( due to my lungs and heart rebelling ) they assured me that I didn’t have to hit the ground running, and that I could ease into it. The instructors are friendly and work with people of all different ages, backgrounds and fitness levels. They don’t make you feel pressured or make fun of you if you can’t catch up with the class right away. I don’t know why I thought they would do this lol But they didn’t :) When I go on a hiatus due to my health the
I was interested in self defense classes. I went to SPAR to look around. I talked with Bill. Bill showed me around and explained the classes that are offered. The school is very clean and has a juice bar. There was no pressure to sign up for any classes. Bill wanted to know what I wanted and he suggested some classes that I could take. I decided to sign up & I ‘m glad I did. Everyone is very friendly in the class and the instructors are awesome! I am taking the women’s self defense course. The instructors are women and they show you real live situations. I’m enjoying the classes I’m involved in and would highly recommend this business for any self defense training.
I am so grateful to have heard the advertisement for SPAR on WDCX (99.5). Instantly I was interested to hear more! I called, and Bills daughter answered the phone. The receptionist is your first impression of a business and wow did she do a phenomenal job! She was incredibly kind and patient, answering my every question. The main one being, what is the difference between SPAR, karate, taekwondo, etc. Her response is what totally sold me! She explained how many parents would call asking if SPAR could help their children, that they are black belts and have spent endless hours and dollars and their children still couldn’t defend themselves. She explained that this is because a lot of other self-defense sports are based off of routine and rhythm. At SPAR they practice real life scenarios, where your children have to discern when they can de-escalate a situation, when they should walk away and when they have to defend themselves. I absolutel
SPAR is amazing! Very friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable instructors. The facility is very clean, modern, and well kept. There is a class for any individual of any skill set- a complete novice to an experienced pro, someone looking for some defense skills or a good workout. My favorite thing about SPAR is how welcoming and encouraging they are! There is no feeling of being judged for your physique, skills, or abilities- they have a way of making you feel completely comfortable. No one ever tells you that you can't do something, but encourages you to try and just give it your best effort. If you have a question, whether about a technique or other issue you're having, the instructors are always willing to take the time to listen and help you out. I love SPAR!
I absolutely love Spar, I've been to other gyms and this is by far the best. The facilities are very clean, the staff knows who you are, the classes are small so you really get the attention you need, and the gym has a great atmosphere. It can be hard to find gyms that are truly welcoming to women, but this gym is very comfortable and full of supportive and welcoming people both staff and clientele included. The prices of membership can be a bit intimidating to some people for a hobby, but the price is really worth it. I even signed my nieces up (ages 7 & 8) they love the kids programs and my coworkers love the women's self defense course. If any part of you wants to try Spar, you should!
I've been a member for around 9 months this past year and it has been a wonderful experience. You don't even have to think about staying in shape if you go a couple times a week, they work you hard and you learn valuable life skills. Sean's Muay Thai class is where I find myself almost 3-4 times a week. You have to admire Sean's work ethic as his classes run 6 days a week and he really switches things up each time to always keep you striking, blocking and grappling (as well as mini Muay Thai history lessons from time to time). To top it off we end each class with a great ab workout. SPAR is so welcoming by every instructor and student.
