This is the school where a couple of friends and I first started training BJJ. Having never trained in any combat sports before, I can confidently say this is a very beginner-friendly environment. Gene is an outstanding coach with years of experience in teaching and a personalized approach to every student. If you’re considering trying a grappling sport for the first time, this is definitely the place to start! On top of that, the atmosphere is laid-back and welcoming, making it ideal for those balancing full-time jobs. It’s more than just a place to learn Jiu-Jitsu—it’s a community where you can connect with interesting people and hang out.
One of the best MMA/BJJ gyms for locals in south brooklyn looking to get some extra training in, or looking to learn BJJ. Learned a lot as a beginner with 0 prior experience, and was a great way to burn some extra calories as well. High level head coach Gene was very respectable and conducts class in an educational/ open mat environment. The students are friendly while focused on competition catered to sharpen each others skills. Highly recommend to those looking for some mat time!
Attending a brazilian jiu-Jitsu class with Gene was an incredible experience. He is knowledgeable, patient, and skilled at breaking down techniques for all levels. The environment is welcoming and fosters a sense of community and respect. Every session is a perfect blend of technical drills, live sparring, and practical application, providing both a great workout and valuable self-defense skills. Can’t wait to see personal progress over time and gain confidence on and off the mat. Highly recommend to anyone looking to challenge themselves physically and mentally. Thank you, Gene.
I’ve known Gene for many years, including back in the day when he first brought me to Renzo Gracie’s gym near Port Authority where he used to practice. Gene has been in this sport for a very long time and is not only a talented practitioner, but an excellent teacher. His ability to analyze what works and what doesn’t, how moves work differently for different people, breaking down technique, etc. make him a far better instructor than many others I have encountered. What you get with him is deep knowledge and passion for the sport, an incredible level of personal attention, and superb technical expertise - all for a price that will probably surprise you if you ever took classes at one of the more fancy schools in the city. I can’t recommend him and South Brooklyn BJJ enough.
I used to drop in for open mat at South Brooklyn BJJ and always had a fantastic experience. Gene is an outstanding black belt with a wealth of knowledge and a great teaching style. The environment is welcoming, and the training partners are skilled and friendly. Highly recommend this gym for anyone looking to improve their jiu-jitsu!
I had an amazing time at this BJJ class! The atmosphere is super friendly and welcoming, with a diverse group of people that makes it even better. The coach is very knowledgeable and has a great sense of humor, which makes learning fun and engaging. I’ve made some great friends here and had an awesome experience overall. I’m definitely coming back here a lot! Highly recommend it to anyone looking to train!
