I've been training at Park Slope Academy for the past two years and cannot speak highly enough about it. The professors Steven and Marc come from excellent jiu jitsu lineages and are both extremely knowledgeable while also being clear, helpful teachers. The younger coaches are polite and responsible young men. Most importantly, the community and gym culture are welcoming, friendly and respectful. This is a gym where training partners take care of one another. I regularly roll with partners who have up to 100 pounds on me and have great rounds. Most importantly this gym truly feels like a community. In any given class you can roll with an artist, a lawyer, a programmer and a tugboat captain, all helping each other improve their games. It's a uniquely inclusive space, and I value the community as highly as I do the jiu jitsu I've learned.
I've been at PSABJJ for almost 3 years and I'm finally getting around to writing this review. From an overall perspective I can say it has been a net-positive in my life and one of the best decisions I've made, ever. The coaches/professors (Marc and Steve) are top of the line. Both truly love jiu-jitsu and teaching the art to everyone here. They've been supportive from day one. They know when to push you a bit and when to give you space to develop through consistent training. They always have an effective answer for any questions about technique, mindset or preparation. They run a good, disciplined academy but also make it fun and enjoyable. You feel like family here. The people who train here are respectful and there is a true team feeling here. The facility and the mats are clean and the place is aesthetically pleasing. Overall if you want to train BJJ in Brooklyn, you need to come here. I did and I'm happy everytime I go to class, it
Training here is nothing short of exceptional. From Professor Marc, Professor Steve, and Professor Jose to Coach Greg and Coach Jeff, every instructor embodies excellence, passion, and an unwavering commitment to their students. The attention to detail is second to none—when you step onto the mats, you're expected to train with focus and dedication. Even as a complete beginner, I’ve felt supported every step of the way. The instructors ensure that every technique is executed with precision and safety, creating an environment where learning thrives. What truly sets this place apart is the culture—everyone, from the newest student to the most experienced practitioner, is eager to help one another grow. This spirit of camaraderie and excellence comes straight from the top, shaping a school where every session is a masterclass in skill, discipline, and community. If you're looking for world-class instruction in an atmosphere built on respec
From the very first day of my (then 5 years old) son's training, I was impressed with how the instructors managed to balance fun and discipline/intensity in each class. There's a strong feeling of community when you walk in there, as the staff takes the time to get to know the families of everyone who trains there. Additionally, I think it speaks highly of the school that so many of their more advanced students come to the beginner classes, of their own volition, just to help out with the beginners. PSA BJJ was a great find, and I look forward to the whole family training here in the future!
I have only been training here for the last 7 weeks but I can already say that it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made. The instructors are top-notch—extremely knowledgeable, patient, and passionate about teaching. Whether you’re brand new to BJJ or have years of experience, you’ll feel welcomed and challenged here. What stands out most is the culture. The team is respectful, humble, and supportive, and there’s a strong emphasis on both learning and safety. Classes are structured in a way that builds your technique step-by-step, and there’s always time for live rolling. The gym is clean, well-maintained, and has a great atmosphere. If you’re thinking about starting BJJ or looking for a new gym, I can’t recommend PSA BJJ enough. It’s more than just a place to train—it’s a community.
As a 47-year-old who has never done martial arts or frankly much of any sport, I was somewhat nervous when starting to attend classes at this school about 3 months ago, unsure if I'd be able to keep up physically and mentally. I should say that my experiences here have surpassed all my expectations. Joining this school has likely been the best decision I've made in years. The atmosphere is very friendly, but also demanding - make no mistake, you'll have a rigorous workout on every visit, and leave a lot of sweat on the mat :-). The feeling of accomplishment is great, and you'll be glad you've pulled through. But it's not just hard work - studying Jiu-Jitsu here is great fun. The instructors here are all amazing, as are my classmates who study here. The place became like a second family to me.
